Summer is upon us, and things are certainly heating up at the Hershey Center For Applied Research (HCAR) with a number of key milestones being completed or just kicking off.

We would like to welcome our new partner, U-GRO Learning Centres, to the Knowledge Community at HCAR. This 16,000-square-foot facility will offer the most advanced learning technologies and amenities available today. U-GRO has been an award-winning provider of early childhood education and childcare in Central Pennsylvania since 1973. Adding U-GRO to the many amenities available for tenants at HCAR – including The Cocoa Beanery Café, catering services, conference rooms, research library, research services, fitness center, etc. – will just add to the appeal of our unique Knowledge Community.

Tech Suites II: Welcoming Our New Tenants

Immunomic Therapeutics, Inc. (ITI) is expanding its reach to the Hershey area by building out its business in the new Tech Suites II facilities. With headquarters in Lancaster, PA, and lab facilities in Rockville, MD, ITI develops next generation vaccines based on the patented LAMP Technology. ITI has the exclusive worldwide license to the LAMP technology patent estate and is creating opportunities for groundbreaking, next-generation LAMP DNA vaccines, beginning with allergy, cancer and infectious diseases.

“Our vision is to create safe and effective vaccines across a broad spectrum of disease applications in human and animal health. In order to be successful and stable in the business, biotechnology companies need the support of facilities like HCAR. We will use our new partnership as a springboard to take our product from R&D into manufacturing. Assistance from HCAR during this process development phase will help us meet our goals and establish ourselves as leaders in advancing DNA sciences,” says Bill Hearl, CEO of ITI.

HCAR is excited to begin this new initiative with such a cutting-edge company.

NICT joins the HCAR Knowledge Community to build out its business in the United States. Providing IT services, solutions, development, training and staffing operations to the Mid-Atlantic region, NICT hopes to add scientific research initiatives to its list of specialties.

“HCAR has already proven itself as a catalyst for early stage and emerging organizations,” says NICT President Ravi Banka. “Even in the infancy of our partnership, we have greatly benefitted from HCAR’s mentorship. Expanding a company is a large undertaking, but HCAR has helped us gain stability and grow in a new place.”

Expected to begin conducting research in the fall, HCAR continues to work with NICT to acquire the correct documentation and laboratory validations for its new space in the Tech Suites II facility.

Pacific Edge: Opening U.S. Headquarters Soon

The story continues to develop around the opening of the new facilities for Pacific Edge Diagnostics USA at HCAR. This New Zealand-based biomedical company specializes in the discovery and commercialization of diagnostic and prognostic technology for the early detection and monitoring of cancer. Beginning work at HCAR will help Pacific Edge deliver on its vision and mission, by enabling its people, their skills, their enthusiasm and their abilities to grow and reach the global community.

“The location is ideal for us, strategically located in close proximity to key major metro areas, medical centers and academic institutions,” says Jacqueline Walker, CEO of Pacific Edge Diagnostics USA. “The HCAR team has been instrumental in introducing us to outstanding resources at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and the local community, as well as helping to facilitate our construction and commercialization start-up activities. We are excited to work with key urologists in the area and to hire some brilliant employees from the highly skilled regional talent pool in Hershey.”

Pacific Edge’s new U.S. CLIA lab and Headquarters at HCAR are scheduled for completion in mid-September. HCAR will help the company obtain CLIA certification by March 2013. Pacific Edge plans to use HCAR as its basecamp to conduct a large U.S. clinical trial at clinical sites across the country while introducing its advanced, non-invasive bladder cancer detection and monitoring test, Cxbladder®, to the market.
