Important Changes to LAFHA

Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA) may be paid by employers to employees who are required to travel away from their usual place of residence on business for an extended amount of time.

Since its introduction, the tax on LAFHA has been payable by the employer under the FBT system. 

You may have recently read that the LAFHA was going to be taxed under the income tax system, and that you may now be required to withhold tax on the payment. This would have impacted the many of you that handle client payroll.

Government to Defend Penalty Rates

The government has announced this week that it will be defending penalty rates on Sundays. Workplace Relations Minister, Bill Shorten will make a ministerial statement urging Fair Work Australia to keep the rates as they are which could be worth an extra $100 for weekend workers.

 

There is also a second submission relating specifically to public holidays.

Enterprise Bargaining Rocks!

 

“More than 2.6 million working Australians and over 20,000 employers have benefited from enterprise agreements made under the Fair Work Act, since it’s commencement in 2009.”

 

Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten has shared statistics which show the positive effect of enterprise bargaining.  Enterprise Agreements are “delivering sustainable wages growth and improved workplace productivity to assist in helping businesses stay competitive.”
