A message from the Head of School to the Crofton House School community as we come to the end of our first full week of remote learning.
Growing our partnership with KidSafe
This week, the CHS Parents’ Auxiliary announced its recommitment to KidSafe as the charity to receive the proceeds from the Crofton House Winter Bazaar in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Our partnership with the organization makes a meaningful impact in the community and has allowed KidSafe to expand their program from six to nine schools in Vancouver. The partnership extends into the School with many students volunteering with the organization and with the CHS kitchen providing a space for KidSafe to prepare meals during school breaks.
A few weeks ago, KidSafe put out a call for help. We want to thank everyone who donated dried food, games and education materials. At this time, KidSafe has been able to remain running. The School will continue to look at ways we can support KidSafe and the important work they are doing to provide meals and programming to vulnerable children during these uncertain times.
Volunteer Opportunity: Class Parents for 2020 - 2021
Class Parent volunteers represent the CHS Parents’ Auxiliary by organizing grade-specific events that enable parents, families, and students to connect with each other and strengthen our community. This is a shared volunteer position with light responsibilities spread out over the entire school year. It is a great way to be creative, meet other parents in your grade, and make new friends. For more information, please contact the class parent coordinator, at classparents@croftonhouse.ca. To sign-up complete the online form by Friday,
May 15.
Uniform Shop
Crofton House is following the directives of British Columbia health officials and has closed the campus through April, including the Uniform Shop. While the shop is not open for in-person visits, you can contact uniform@croftonhouse.ca with any questions you may have.
As remote learning builds momentum at Crofton House, this newsletter will continue to feature some of the unique learning and notable moments that are happening online. While it will look different than our usual photos and descriptions of classrooms and events, we hope the newsletter will help our community continue to feel connected as we need to stay apart, and to share in the innovative efforts being made across all grades.
Grade 12 student Andrea was featured in the Community Connection segment of CTV News Vancouver Morning Live. Andrea performed an original song, “Stay Home”, written to inspire a little optimism and humour while the city practices social distancing. The segment includes Vancouverites who are finding unique ways to stay connected from a safe distance. Listen to the full song.
Students in AP Computer Science programmed their own COVID-19 contagion simulator in Java using C3D.io, a virtual reality programming platform that works in browsers.
The AP Calculus class started their remote learning with a bit of fun. Head Girl, Amanda, organized a prank utilizing the “virtual background” feature in Zoom.
Grade 6 students show they are adapting quickly to their new online learning environments, bringing plenty of classroom cheer and good spirit to this Zoom meeting.
A familiar sight in many homes right now, Junior School students started remote learning this week dedicating a specific area as their workstation and adjusting to a new routine. As new routines are taking hold, Ms Hutchison, in the Junior School’s first virtual assembly, reminds us that during times of change it is helpful to look for things that remain the same. Things like the weather, family meals together, your bedroom, or even the fact that we can look forward to a story during assembly.
