Today is the last day of National Reconciliation Week (NRW) for 2024. This year it ran from Monday 27 May to Monday 3 June. Gawura and St Andrew’s Cathedral School celebrated NRW across all K-12 with various activities. Last Monday 27 May, we engaged the services of Ms Lavinia Gibbs-Williams who held workshops across all K-6 involving both Gawura and Junior School students. Our K-2 students were introduced to the theme through a Dreaming story, How the Koala came to be told by Brendan Mitchell (Gunawirra Dreamtime Stories). Through the story, students explored the practice of inclusion. They were able to recognise that being included leads to positive feelings. Students related the feeling to the green and yellow zones in the Zones of Regulation – happy and excited. Students completed an activity where they gave concrete examples of how they can
practice inclusion in our school community.

Through the exploration of this year’s Reconciliation theme- ‘Now More Than Ever!’, Stage 2 students explored the concept of Reconciliation. They identified ways in which they can individually play a meaningful role in healing our Nation through Reconciliation.
Stage 3 students were greeted in the dialect of Aunty Vin’s mob. They were then educated on some key moments and figures in the History of Australia’s First Nation Peoples. These included the 1967 Referendum and an insight into the life of the land rights activist, Eddie Mabo. The session ended with students creating a poster, each decorated in orange, black and purple. Each colour carried a specific meaning and they were used to decorate a promise that each student wrote in the centre of their page. This promise was a personal and specific commitment that they would aim to adhere to that would help the reconciliation between the different people living in Australia. A selection of students then volunteered to share their commitments with the entire group.

On Friday 31 May our Aboriginal students in the secondary school from Years 7-12 attended the annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Veterans Commemoration Service held at the Hyde Park War Memorial. The service was moving as always and our two senior students Joshua Morgan in Year 10 and Alexander Bacon in Year 11 both laid a wreath on behalf of all students and staff from St Andrew’s Cathedral School and Gawura, in honour of our First Nations serviceman and women who served Australia in the past and who are currently serving their country, in the armed forces today.

Last Saturday 1 June, saw the inaugural Indigenous Round occur in the regular Saturday morning IPSHA Sporting competition. Each home team had the responsibility of starting the game with an Acknowledgement of Country. In rugby we had Gawura students Anthony and Bryden say the Acknowledgement of Country honouring the Gu-ring-gai clan of the Eora Nation and in the netball Gawura School Captain, Kallarah said the Acknowledgement of Country honouring the Gadigal clan of the Eora Nation. I attended the rugby on Saturday morning at Koola Park in East Killara and it was a delight to see five Gawura students playing for our school. Well done to Anthony and Djani in the U12’s and to Bryden, BJ and Teancum who played in the U11’s. Our teams won all four games that were played.

As part of our secondary transition programme for our Gawura Year 6 students moving into Year 7 at St Andrew’s Cathedral School, we will be holding a Coffee in the Hub for Gawura Year 6 parents on Wednesday 12 June from 8am. This will be an opportunity for you to meet the Junior School Year 6 teachers and other key staff who will be able to explain how Semester 2 will work for our Gawura students as they enter the Junior School.
Our preparations for NAIDOC are continuing. Our Aboriginal Dance teacher, Aunty Rayma has created a new contemporary dance that will feature at this year’s NAIDOC Assembly. The students have been rehearsing hard and listening to Aunty Rayma when she explains what the meaning is behind the dance moves that they are doing. It will be very special when they perform it. We have also booked an Aboriginal performance for all Gawura and Junior School students in K-6 to see as part of NAIDOC week as well. Our annual NAIDOC Assembly will be held on Thursday 27 June in the Cathedral starting at 9.30am.
Finally, a new date to put in your calendars now is the postponed Yarning Session With Parents which usually occurs in Week 5, will now be held on Wednesday 19 June at 10.30am at the Rabbitohs High Performance Training Centre in Maroubra. Our parents will be presented with the story behind this year’s Rabbitohs Indigenous jersey and what it means and the Elders who were responsible for its design. This will be followed by a tour of the facilities including a meet and greet with the players themselves. The Gawura bus will leave from Bathurst St at 10am and return to Bathurst St at 12pm. For those parents wishing to meet us there on the day, the address is South Sydney Rabbitohs, Heffron Centre, 417-439 Bunnerong Rd, Maroubra. It will commence at 10.30am and run for 1 hour. Thank you to Gawura parents, Alisha and Buddy who have kindly organised this activity as our next Yarning Session

Free NBN connection offer
Please see the details below regarding a free NBN connection offer.
In 2023, the Australian Government established the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) to provide free home internet until 31/12/2025 for up to 30,000 unconnected families with school age
students. Giving unconnected students the opportunity to access fast and reliable broadband internet at home is important to support their learning and education in an increasingly digital world.
NBN Co is leading implementation of this initiative and is working closely with industry, government and community organisations that support the wellbeing of families who could benefit from the SSBI.
It is Anglicare’s hope that they can provide free internet to 30,000 families by the end of 2024.
Who is eligible?
A family must:

Have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school.
-
Do not currently have an active nbn network internet service at home – having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
-
Live in premises that can access the nbn network through a standard connection. This includes all technologies (fibre, fixed wireless, satellite).

Communicating your child's absence from school
We wish to remind you of the process you are required to follow for instances that your child is absent from school. This process applies to absence due to illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, late arrivals or leaving early.
Gawura families should contact their class teacher via text and also the Gawura Bus Phone if they are due to be on the morning bus. This way the driver is not waiting around for a child who is sick and will not show up. It also means the students at other stops will not be late to school.
You are required to let us know each day your child is absent due to illness, even if they were sick the day before.

It is quite lovely to see the many of you who wait in the Square for your children to be dismissed each afternoon. It certainly reflects the type of school we are that you wait expectantly and chat with each other as our school day draws to a close.
Could we politely ask that you do remain in the Square and not enter the foyer (unless you need to chat with Reception staff) so that we can help our youngest students and their teachers locate their parents each afternoon?

Teaching consent to our children
‘Consent Can’t Wait’ is the campaign recently launched by the Australian Government to support parents and carers in having meaningful conversations with their children about the topic of consent.
Today many people associate the word ‘consent’ with sexual consent and therefore dismiss it as not relevant for our children, but actually consent means an agreement to do something. Therefore, it is a core concept of all respectful relationships across the lifespan. At school we actively teach students the concepts of consent in modelling to them ways to clearly ask if other children would like to play a game with them, or if they can share a toy, or give a hug. We make routine the asking for, and waiting on, the other person’s permission before proceeding, as it is a key part of respectful relationships and the foundation on which consent for more complex issues is built.
Thinking about the core principles of consent in a common Junior School context, such as playing handball, we can see that consent is:
-
Free and voluntary - avoid ‘bossing’ or forcing people to play.
-
Clear and informed - avoid changing the rules of the game without checking with everyone.
-
Active and communicated - ask to join a game and expect a clear reply that you can join in.
-
Ongoing and mutual - it is ok if someone decides that they don’t want to play anymore.
-
Able and capable- don’t keep playing if someone is injured or can no longer play.
These concepts set the foundations for respectful relationships across the lifespan.
The Consent Can’t Wait website has conversation guides to aide parents in starting these conversations with their children.
Also, we are soon hosting our Amazing Me! seminars which will give more information about consent in the context of bodies and healthy relationships.

Song writing lessons with Benny Davis
The new opportunity exists for students to undertake song writing lessons with one of the industry’s most successful songwriters, Benny Davis. Interested? Contact music@sacs.nsw.edu.au to find out more and express interest.
Benny Davis is a musician and comedian, best known from Australian comedy trio, The Axis of Awesome. He has been a songwriter with them and as a solo artist for 16 years, as well as an audio engineer, producing music for live theatre, television, advertising and digital content. As a teacher, he explores all areas of songwriting and composition, including:

Theory - develop a well-rounded musical vocabulary to make informed choices when writing.
-
Ear training - learn to play by ear, and translate inspired sounds from your head to the instrument to the page.
-
Harmony - learn all the chords, not just four.
-
Genre - analyse and deconstruct all pop music genres to understand the unique aspects of each.
-
Songwriting exercises - breakdown to a molecular level to practice writing individual song elements, from simply setting lyrics to rhythm and then melody, all the way to writing succinct hooks, catchy choruses and reharmonised refrains.

Arrangement - analysis of instrumentation and production in pop music to choose suitable genres.
-
Recording - an introduction to audio engineering to prepare demo tracks for studio producers and arrangers.

The St Andrews Cathedral Choir has formed some of the most famous talent in the country. The choristers sing in Australia’s oldest Cathedral, and in some of the

Chorister scholarships are now available for boys from Years 2-6 and include educational scholarship at St Andrew’s Cathedral School. They receive a 25% reduction in tuition fees during a probationary period which increases to 50% following the promotion to full chorister.

What’s happening in the Art Space?
Students in Year 3 are studying sculpture as a form of 3D art-making to represent human movement and emotion. Influenced by Alberto Giacometti’s simple line sculptural forms, students have begun creating a series of foil, wire and plaster sculptures.
Year 2’s work in collage has seen students create flambouyant and toned collaged tropical birds using a selected palette of colour.

Read More Challenge
Students who have completed the PRC are also eligible to enter our Read More Challenge. For every additional 10 books they read they have the chance to win a book of their choice up to the value of $25. Entry forms are available from the Library.
Our second draw was held in Week 3, this Term. Congratulations to Ariana Kozinets in Kindergarten who was our first Read More Challenge Winner this Term. Ariana chose a beautiful book, An anthology of intriguing animals, by children’s publisher DK.

National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 22 May we were one of the 2,306,779 participants who shared reading Aura Parker’s Bowerbird Blues across 20,581 schools, libraries, childcare centres, and family homes around the country. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual event organised by the Australian Library and Information Association to encourage reading aloud a selected text on the same day at the same time.
Our school likes to be a little bit different so we watched a special recording of the book by Ms Lavinia Gibbs, recent Gawura teacher, who treated us with a reading that included words from her own language. Bowerbird in Gamilaraay language is Wiidhaa and we learnt many other words as part of this storytelling.
We now have two copies of Bowerbird Blues in our Library – one of these includes each of the Gamilaraay words translated by Ms Gibbs so that we can continue to learn our First Nation’s languages.
In the lead up to the event each class received a special invitation by the Bowerbird to help fill his nest with blue items. Our bowerbird nest was quickly overflowing with blue items of all sizes and types.
On the day, students also enjoyed a selection of activities around the book during lunch time, including picture hunts from the end papers of Bowerbird Blues, making a bowerbird nest to take home and using water colour to paint the bowerbird couple.

National Reconciliation Week
The theme for this year’s Natinal Reconciliation Week is ‘Now More Than Ever’ which uses chevron imagery as a universally accepted symbol of moving forward. It encourages us to continue to journey, connect and listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people so that we can work towards a reconciled future.
In our Library this week we have learnt about traditional games that our First Nation’s People play. One of these is a spinning top game known as Bunbuja. Traditionally, spin-tops were made from the gourds of the benincasa vacua, in an area of north Queensland. Cape Grafton people called them bunbuja. The spin top was made by passing a stick through the gourd and then using twine and beeswax to hold it in position. These were only made by men. Sometimes a hole was made in the side, to make it hum.
Our students decorated cardboard circles and poked a toothpick through the centre to make their own bunbuja. We watched them create different patterns as they spun and talked about these traditional games and how they have been transformed into current games and play. In doing so, our students are making powerful connections between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and its impact on their own lifestyle.

Book Fair on Grandparents' Day
We are excited to be opening our Book Fair again this year as part of our Grandparents' Day celebrations on Friday 7 June 2024.
The Book Fair will be set up on both Level 6 and Level 7 of SAH, with a range of books available for purchase on the day. Our Level 6 Fair will have books appropriate for Years 5 and 6 and the Level 7 Fair will have a range of books for students from Kindergarten up to Year 4.
We hope that you will be able to set some time aside on the day to come along and support our Book Fair, but more importantly, to support our students' READING!

Sydney Writer’s Festival
On Thursday 23 May, various students from Years 3 to 6 attended the Sydney Writers' Festival: Primary School Days programme at Sydney Town Hall. The festival featured presentations and workshops from exceptional authors and illustrators, including Kate and Jol Temple (co-authors of the picture book series Bin Chicken and action-adventure graphic novels including Frog Squad), Nova Weetman (author of novels including Sick Bay and The Edge of Thirteen), Tasma Walton (author of the Nerra: Deep Time Traveller series) and Nathan Luff (author of The Nerd Herd and The Family Disasters series) in a celebration of storytelling across a range of genres.

The students thoroughly enjoyed hearing from exceptional authors and engaging in meet-and-greet opportunities throughout the day. Below are some reflections from the students about their time at the festival.
Kate and Jol Temple were really fun presenters. They dressed up as frogs and had a bin chicken race, where they threw inflatable birds around the room! I really like the book they wrote called ‘Frog Squad’. It is a great book for my age group and has interesting characters. Ethan Ratilal, Year 3
Nova Weetman is an amazing author with just the right amount of everything in her books. She used to be a writer for television, working on shows such as ‘H2O Just Add Water’. In her presentation, Nova introduced us to Octopus Charts, which help her make characters. She used one of these charts to create an extremely funny character with the help of 1,700 students during the festival! Sophia Theodosiou, Year 4
The author Tasma Walton is a well-known Indigenous representative. She has authored several books, one of which is ‘Nerra: Deep Time Traveller’, a story which shares the Dreaming of the Boonwurrung people of coastal Melbourne. My favourite part of Tasma’s presentation was when she introduced different stories of the Aboriginal Dreamtime. Winnie Hong, Year 5
Nathan Luff grew up with three other brothers on a farm in rural New South Wales. He had an awesome appearance at the Sydney Writers' Festival and made many of us chuckle. He shared hilarious jokes, insane stories, and even told us how he thought of ideas for some of his biggest hits. Everybody laughed at his humour and how his three crazy siblings helped inspire many books! Aidan He, Year 6

NSW da Vinci Decathlon
On Thursday 16 May, selected students from Years 5 and 6 participated in the NSW da Vinci Decathlon at Knox Grammar School. The NSW da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge the minds of school students from over 75 schools across the state. Throughout the event, students competed in teams of eight to solve problems across ten disciplines: engineering, mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy. The theme for this year’s NSW da Vinci Decathlon was ‘Utopia’.
Our students worked exceptionally well together and achieved the following outstanding results:
Year 5 placed 4th in mathematics, 10th in legacy and 15th for science.

ICAS Assessments
In Term 3, Junior School students across Years 2-6 will have the opportunity to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) programme.
The ICAS programme provides a platform for students to demonstrate academic excellence in assessments across six different subject areas, including English, writing, spelling, mathematics, science and digital technologies. These assessments are designed two years above grade level and are therefore not recommended for every student.
They require students to apply higher-order thinking and advanced problem-solving skills.
All assessments will be completed online using school devices.
Students placed in an accelerated class will be automatically enrolled in all six of the ICAS assessments, with the cost charged to student accounts. If you would like to withdraw your child’s enrolment, please contact Mrs Rebecca Lord before Friday 31 May.
Please note that participation in the ICAS assessments for these students is strongly recommended.

ASISSA Cross Country Carnival
On Friday 24 May we sent our mighty cross country team to the ASISSA Cross Country Carnival at Queens Park. It was a stunning autumn’s day and there were some fantastic results including two podium finishes, where a total of seven students will be heading to the CIS Primary Cross-Country Championships on Thursday 6 June. Girl's hockey
Our newly established girl’s hockey team celebrated a hard fought 3-2 victory over PLC Sydney, showing a skilful display of learning and exceptional teamwork on the field. Our girls have been training very hard and we are excited to see our girls continue to thrive as the season continues.
Boys football
Round 4 for our U9 and U10 boys football teams was a round to remember with two dominant victories over some quality competition. Our U9s produced an astonishing 12-0 win over Barker, and our U10s showed some finesse and class with a competitive 7-1 victory over Kincoppal Rose Bay. Our boys have been training very hard and it is very pleasing to see our boys show humility in victory.

Girl's netball
A positive round for our netball teams saw two wins from our 6A and 5A teams showing their exceptional coordination and strategic gameplay throughout their matches. Our 6B team were unlucky in a very close battle with Danebank, losing by a point in the final stages of the game but showed commendable resilience and sportsmanship throughout the entire game.

Mixed Rugby
Despite a determined effort against some well-skilled and organised competition in the likes of Trinity, Newington, and Redlands, both of our mixed rugby teams fell just short of winning honours. Our boys showed great commitment right until the final whistle of their respective games to which they should be proud of their efforts in questioning some high-quality competition.

Our Girls hockey team delivered an impressive win against Roseville, securing a solid 4-0 victory. Fantastic teamwork and dedication were on full display!

Our mixed rugby teams had an outstanding weekend, with some impressive performances.

Thrilling win over Coogee Prep: 5-4.
U11s:
Triumphant over Sydney Grammar: 4-3.

Our netball teams showcased their skills and determination:
6A – An outstanding win against Meriden with a score of 16-6. Well done girls!
6B – Despite a washout, our team was leading 3-0 before the game was called. A great start!
Boys soccer
Our Boys soccer teams had an eventful weekend:
U9
A spectacular win against Sydney Grammar with an impressive 8-1 score.
U10
Fought hard but faced a tough loss against Trinity, ending 4-2. Great effort, boys! A special mention to Arlo (Year 5) for some great goals in the game.

Join us for Grandparents’ Day!
We are excited to invite grandparents to join us for a special assembly in the Cathedral, followed by morning tea, as we celebrate your role as a grandparent and your importance in our greater school community. For our Junior School and Gawura families (Years K-6), this event will take place on Friday 7 June at 9:15am.
These events are for grandparents or a special relative, godparent or auntie/uncle. Unfortunately we do not have space to cater for parents at this event.

Illuminate
Join us at the historic Sydney Town Hall for Showcase 2024 Illuminate. The concert will feature outstanding performances from ensembles and soloists, K-12, and will also feature a highlight from the recent school musical performance of The Little Mermaid. The concert will also feature the exciting world premiere of a composition composed for St Andrew’s Cathedral School! Titled Life Giving Learning, it is composed by award-winning Australian film composer Finn Clarke and will be performed by the Symphony Orchestra and Cathedral Choristers live to recently filmed school footage projected on the big screen in Town Hall. A night not to be missed in our 25th Anniversary year of coeducation!

Join us for our NAIDOC Celebrations
Gawura is inviting our community to the annual NAIDOC celebrations. Come and hear what this year’s theme, Keep the Fires Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud, means to our students. See the students perform dances choreographed specially for them by the esteemed Aunty Rayma Johnson and hear from our special guests. All welcome.
The assembly begins at 9:30am, followed by morning tea at 10:30am.
