Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora everyone, Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Wednesday 3 June. Some highlights of our meeting included approving funding for a number of important community group projects from our Discretionary Response Fund, including the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network, Institution of Professional Engineers, and the Richmond Residents and Business Association. We also agreed to provide funding to the Light Bulb Moments Fund. This fund is designed to provide a range of groups and organisations with easily accessible funding stream to help them delivery community initiatives. You can read more about community funding here. Council adopts new Draft Annual PlanChristchurch City Council has approved a new draft budget that takes into account the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the organisation and on ratepayers. The revised Draft Annual Plan 2020–21 proposes an average residential rate rise of 2.23 per cent, which is an overall average rate increase of 3.5 per cent. Meet our featured Community Board memberIn this edition of our newsletter, we're featuring board member Darrell Latham. Darrell's friends say he's someone who refuses to give up and who will stand up for people. His most defining moment in life was when his daughter Julia was diagnosed with cancer, which changed the way he views life. He'd love to learn to play the saxophone, but for now, is content listening to the accomplished experts. Read more about Darrell below. Work starts next month on Linwood’s new poolWork on Linwood’s new pool, Te Pou Toetoe will begin in July with local contractor, Apollo Projects, setting up on site. Improvements proposed for Linwood bus stopsThe Board has recommended improved bus facilities on Buckleys Road by Eastgate Mall. The recommendation is to cul-de-sac Norwich Street to provide space for a better bus stop and to provide a traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing to improve access to the bus stop. The project will now be referred to Council for a final decision. New Ensors Road restrictions ensure safer parking near railway linesThe Board has approved a recommendation for no stopping restrictions on Ensors Road, near the railway crossing. This is to ensure vehicles and people in or around the vehicles are at a safe distance from passing trains and any debris that could fall from a train. Going forwards, there will be clear signage and road markings and people won’t be able to park within six metres of the railway lines. Work underway on Port Hills Road water main replacementWe’re replacing a 600 metre section of water main on Port Hills Road between Mauger Drive and Martindales Road. Our contractors are locating underground services before open trenching along the carriageway and footpaths. This work is on track to finish by 28 August 2020. Work to start on Port Hills Road sewer chamberChristchurch City Council contractors are installing a sewer chamber to allow us to access the underground wastewater pipeline. We need to close part of Port Hills Road from number 45 through 55 so we can install this important piece of infrastructure. This work will run from Friday 6 June until Tuesday 26 June 2020. Report odour via Smelt It appIf you live in Bromley you can continue to report odour using Environment Canterbury’s 'Smelt It' app. Read last week’s Newsline story about the Bromley pilot study here. Board votes not to fence dog agility areaLocal dog owners will soon have more opportunity for pooch playtime at Woolston's Radley Park dog agility area, now that the park's rejuvenation project is a step closer to completion. On Wednesday 3 June, the Waikura/Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board approved a staff recommendation not to fence the dog agility area. This work is due to start in late August 2020 once the final detail design and tendering is completed. Have your say on pedestrian bridges in the Ōtākaro Avon River CorridorWe’d like to hear what you think about proposed plans for three pedestrian bridges (two replacement bridges and one in a new location) that will be developed along the Green Spine of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor. Consultation closes 29 June 2020. Libraries issue call to return overdue booksMore than 120,000 books are back on Christchurch City Libraries shelves. However, a significant number of the loans prior to the lockdown period remain outstanding. Customers are being asked to check around their homes for any books or other library items that may have been forgotten while our libraries have been closed to the public, and to return these items by 15 June to avoid any fines. First hour free in Council parking buildingsChristchurch City Council will provide one-hour free parking in its central city parking buildings for the next three months to encourage people to come into the city centre and support the local hospitality and retail businesses over winter. Council approves change to Christchurch Housing InitiativeA housing scheme that offers Christchurch families a helping hand into home ownership is being amended to resolve a regulatory issue. There will be a range of activities and entertainment from colouring sheets, to video, crafts and blogs. Bookings no longer needed for pools, fitness centreSwimmers and fitness centre users no longer need to book for Christchurch City Council's pools or fitness centres. Bookings are only required for group fitness classes, aqua classes and Tumbletimes. Spas, hydrotherapy pools and hydroslides are now open again and can be used without a booking. Plant a tree for Arbor DayArbor Day is an environmental day held every year on 5 June dedicated to planting a tree. The Parks Volunteering team is holding several events over the weekend where residents can register to take part and plant a tree.
