It’s widely believed that we become more right wing with age. But new research has thrown up an interesting additional twist. Using data from Western Europe and Canada, Rosalind Shorrocks has found that young women are more left wing than their male counterparts. But older women are more likely to be found on the right of the political spectrum than older men. The findings represent a challenging prospect for political parties. Those who think they’ve been chasing the “female” vote might have been going about it all wrong.
Humans have evolved a long way from the first multicellular lifeforms classed as animals. And yet new research suggests we’re not actually that different, at least at a genetic level. Jordi Paps explains how, by reconstructing the genome of the last common ancestor of all animals, he showed that most human genes actually descend from this ancient type of lifeform.
It’s been 40 years since the racist murder of Altab Ali, a young Bangladeshi man, in Whitechapel, east London. To mark the anniversary Aminul Hoque spoke to Bangladeshis in the area, including some who knew him, to explore the legacy of the murder – and how it mobilised the Bangladeshi community to rise up against racism.
