Smarter, Cleaner, Greener AchievementsCouncil’s Environment, Waste and Parks departments sure had a busy 2018. From renewable energy projects, waste minimisation programs, upgrades of our open space, bushcare activities and lots more. Ryde Citizen Scientists Contribute To National ProjectCity of Ryde is one of 22 councils who are collaborating with the University of NSW and RMIT University on a national Citizen Science Urban Climate Project. Students from Epping Boys' High School, Ryde Secondary College and Macquarie University will participate by measuring air temperature, relative humidity and surface temperatures in selected precincts. Project results will assist policy makers and council in predicting future health needs and impacts, and in planning for the future built urban environment and open space in Ryde. Through data collection and participation in the project, citizens will be educated on the impacts and causes of urban heat and be empowered to respond to extreme heat through an understanding of these factors. The results will also assist council in responding to these issues in future plans such as a local ‘Resilience Plan’ to be prepared in the coming year. Sustainable Food Packaging SuppliersAt its meeting on 22 May 2018, Council resolved to reduce single-use plastics at Council events. Plastic does not biodegrade, instead it breaks into small micro-plastics which have a detrimental impact on the health of our waterways, oceans and marine life. To assist with this transition at our events, Council is creating a list of approved disposable sustainable food packaging suppliers that our event stallholders can use. Do you know a business that offers sustainable packaging? Council are inviting suppliers of disposable sustainable food packaging to register. Upcoming Events
