Winkie needs eye surgery

Main Content Inline Small

Meet our little Wink-man... He is just a year old, and one of the sweetest little cats we have ever rescued. He is loving and playful and full of life and energy! But Wink's story (like so many other homeless cats) didn't start out so great. Fortunately, he has met a lot of angels on his journey so far!

See more photos of our little Winkie on KittyCam!

Found as a kitten by an animal control officer in Livingston (in the central valley), he had an upper respiratory infection and she knew he would not survive in a shelter. Lucky Winkie stayed with her in her office until she could find a rescue to take him. At the time, ASCS was taking another cat from the area, and we were asked to take Wink as well. The rest is... history!!

Winkie landed in a wonderful foster home, he was blossoming into a happy, adoptable little fella, but they noticed that Winkie had constant eye problems, sometimes just watery, sometimes looking very painful.

The vets confirmed that he had an eye deformity -- well, three eye deformities really! First of all, his lids are too short -- so when he sleeps they don't shut all the way. Next -- his lids curl in, so some of his lashes scratch against his cornea. On top of that, he has even more lashes underneath that don't belong there! In all, there are around 20 lashes rubbing his left cornea and a half dozen or so rubbing his right. Constant abrasion to his cornea can cause the corneas to ulcerate and eventually could cause the Wink to go blind, not to mention it is very painful.

So, Winkie needs surgery... possibly two surgeries! First, they will do a little nip/tuck on the lid to roll his lids 'out' instead of 'in'. If that doesn't completely do the trick, he will have a treatment where they remove the extra under-lashes. I have put this in very simplistic terms, but they are major surgeries requiring specialized care. The wonderful vets are helping us with rates, but the surgeries that Winkie must have are very specialized and very expensive.

Wink would so appreciate it if you could donate to his surgery fund. Any little bit will help! It's easy -- go to our website www.ascscats.org and look for the Make a Donation button! Or, you can mail a check to:
