Editor's note

As Dutch citizens head to the polls today in a much-anticipated vote, we bring you two perpsectives on the right-wing nationalism that, say many, a Geert Wilders victory in the Netherlands could foment in Europe.

First, as Karoline Postel-Vinay argues, we must remember that Europe's emerging democratic crisis is nothing new: nationalist tensions have been on the rise across the world for over a decade.

And Floris Vermeulen and Maria Kranendonk ask how Dutch Muslims will vote in today's election. All major parties in the Netherlands have moved to the right on Islam and immigration, a political shift exacerbated by the recent spat between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Dutch government.
