Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, Highlights of our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Monday 1 February. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents as part of our Public Forum. Harry Stronach spoke to the Board regarding the transfer of Council's Customer Services from the Akaroa Service Centre to the Akaroa School and Community Librarys and groups. Linda Sunderland from the Comte de Paris Descendants Group Inc. and the Akaroa Cemeteries Group updated the Board regarding the Akaroa Cemeteries Project. Juliet Neill, resident, and Jenny Healey, Chairperson Cass Bay Residents Association, along with Ken Maynard, Chairperson Lyttelton Community Association,
spoke to the Board regarding fire risk management in Lyttelton and the Harbour Basin. Level 3 water restrictions for parts of Banks PeninsulaWater restrictions have been increased from Level 2 to Level 3 for Akaroa, Duvauchelle and Takamatua on Banks Peninsula as increasingly hot and windy conditions put pressure on water supplies. Level 3 restrictions means hand-held hosing only on alternate days, with no outdoor water use on any day between 3pm and 9pm. Unattended hoses, sprinklers, and garden irrigation systems are not permitted at any time. Magazine Bay Marina to closeLyttelton’s Magazine Bay Marina is going to shut, soplans for the wider development of the area can proceed as outlined in the Naval Point-Te Nukutai o Tapoa Development Plan, which was approved by the Banks Peninsula Community Board in November last year. The implementation of the plan is estimated at $27 million and will take place in stages over several years as funding becomes available. Waitangi Day Commemorations 2021Join a fun day full of family activities, commemorations, demonstrations, workshops and exhibits set amongst the extensive museum grounds in the beach and lagoon-side village of Okains Bay. A highlight of the day is the paddling of the magnificent Ngāi Tahu waka, Kōtukumairangi on the Ōpara River. Cassels Brewing Co. Banks Peninsula FestivalChristchurch's newest outdoor family daytime music festival is coming to Orton Bradley Park. On Saturday 20 February, enjoy world-class local musical talent across two stages, international quality cooking demonstrations in our sprawling teepee and stroll the gorgeous grounds between and surrounding each area at your leisure. Pedal for the PacificPedal for the Pacific is a sponsored charity bike ride to raise funds for the Give Every Child a Future project. It will be taking place along the Little River Rail Trail from 8:30am on Saturday 20 February, starting at Prebbleton School and finishing at Little River Domain. After the ride there will be coffee carts, cold drinks and food available for purchase plus prizes for the individual and team who raise the most funds. Road works on Lyttelton’s Simeon QuayPeople who travel on Lyttelton’s Simeon Quay should expect some disruptions over the next few months as work is done to replace the ageing retaining wall that supports part of the road. Duvauchelle Stormwater Outfall worksDuvauchelle residents can expect some changes to the road layout as work is carried out to renew the storm water road crossings and outfall. Work started in January and is expected to run for 11 weeks. Temporary traffic management has been set up along Pawson Valley Road and the intersection with state highway 75. Cheque payments coming to an endChristchurch City Council is stopping cheques as a payment option. Residents will no longer be able to make cheque payments from 30 April 2021, due to the three major New Zealand banks phasing them out in May, June and July of this year. Health warning over swimming in Akaroa’s Glen BayPeople are being warned to stay out of the water and not take shellfish from Glen Bay in Akaroa, following concerns over high levels of faecal bacteria found in a recent sample. Banks Peninsula speed limit reviewWe're making changes so it's safer for everyone to drive around the Peninsula. Our proposed plan to lower speed limits on Banks Peninsula – including Akaroa and Lyttelton – is now open for public feedback. We're proposing 40km/h speed limits for sections of the two main townships, and Cass Bay, and a 40km/h limit in Waipapa Avenue Diamond Harbour, and significantly lower speeds – from 100km/h to 60km/h – along many winding rural roads. Move to better protect native vegetation on coastal farmlandA proposed change to the Christchurch District Plan to boost the protection of native trees and plants on coastal farmland is open for public feedback.The proposed changes seek to limit the clearance of indigenous vegetation within improved pasture on Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills to ensure potentially significant native trees and plants are not removed without a resource consent.
