Here’s a snapshot of the latest information we've received regarding planned World Diabetes Day activities around the world:

  • In Brazil, the Association of National Diabetes Associations and Entities (ANAD), a member association of the International Diabetes Federation, will be holding its annual nationwide diabetes awareness campaign on 6 November. Close to 1,000 towns and cities all over the country will host activities that include walks, screenings for diabetes and its complications, the promotion of healthy foods, writing and drawing competitions for school children, blue lightings and other initiatives aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles. Over 1 million people are expected to be reached by the campaign. More details.

  • In El Salvador, the town of Ilopango will see World Diabetes Day marked with a variety of awareness activities that include a breakfast meeting for 500 people with diabetes and their families, a seminar for health professionals, the screening of educational videos in a local hospital and the formation of a human blue circle in the town park.

  • In Mexico, Raul Barba Alhadro from Tijuana will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest lecture ever delivered, by speaking for 125 hours on diabetes for World Diabetes Day. Starting on 9 November, Raul aims to break the record of 121 hours set by Errol Muzawazi from Poland in 2009. On 14 November, Raul will talk exclusively about World Diabetes Day. Show your support for his attempt.

  • In the USA, the College of Marin County in Kentfield California will be the setting for Bay Area Diabetes Day 2011, an event aimed at creating diabetes awareness and linking the local community to programmes and resources available. The event will take place on 13 November and will include speeches by leading diabetes advocates, a health fair with screenings for diabetes and its complications, health and disease prevention education and consultations, healthy lifestyle change promotion with yoga and Zumba workshops, affordable nutritious food options, and an Awareness Walk/Run/Roll. To also mark the day, the internationally recognized Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center will light in blue for diabetes.

Keep sending us your event information.

UN Summit puts NCDs on the map

Inline Image

This past week world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations High-Level Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and unanimously adopted the Political Declaration on NCDs, agreeing that “the global burden and threat of NCDs constitutes one of the major challenges for development in the twenty-first century, which undermines social and economic development throughout the world.”

“This meeting has made the world sit up and take notice of the huge global burden that NCDs - cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease - are placing on all countries,” said NCD Alliance Chair Ann Keeling. “Countries now need to be urgently factoring NCDs into their longer term health planning alongside other pressing health challenges.”

World Diabetes Day on 14 November presents a golden opportunity to build on the momentum generated by the Summit and recapture the world's attention on diabetes. We therefore encourage you to integrate the messages and outcomes of the Summit into your planned activities and communications for the day to impress on governments and policy makers the importance of elevating diabetes and NCDs up the global health agenda. Find out about all the outcomes of the Summit.

On 18 September, hundreds gathered at the New York Academy of Medicine and in Central Park to 'UNite for a Healthy Future' and show their support for the UN Summit on NCDs. The inspiring afternoon included an awareness bike ride and health walk, a Caribbean carnival, live mural art paintings and more. View pictures of the event.
