Her film adaptation of Miles Franklin’s iconic novel was in the forefront of the 1970's Australian film renaissance. She was a trend-setter, too, being female, only 29 and interested in feminist themes. Winner of eight AACTA and BAFTA awards the film set her on a brilliant career of her own with films like Oscar and Lucinda and Charlotte Gray (both with Cate Blanchett) and more recently Love, Lies and Lust (winner of the Australian Directors Guild Award) and Women He’s Undressed. Stay tuned for details of a red-carpet cocktail party where you can meet and hear Gillian before the screening of the beautiful digitally restored film on Saturday 18th May. On Sunday 19th May a major discussion on Brilliant Careers, Strong Women will have a panel on which Gillian will be joined by strong women speakers from Tasmania, Melbourne and Indonesia. Not to be missed. Free admission. BOFA 2019 is shaping up as the year of strong women in film and 50% of the films screened this year at BOFA will be by female directors or with a focus on women. It has grown 7-fold since then. But the festival needs support. We are screening more films, expanding to Hobart, running pop-up screenings and further developing the Day on the Kingsway food and wine festival……. but government funds have shrunk by $75,000 whilst only 5% of box office sales are left after venue and film hire. To address this we’ve found generous corporate partners but we still need help from individual Patrons for a shortfall of $20,000. Donations support the costs of: 1. promoting the festival state-wide and nationally A successful 2019 festival aims to grow the audience to 9,000+ and to 10,000+ in 2020, when the state and local government will review their level of support. These audience numbers will provide a powerful reason for the film festival to have its government grants increased. So, will you be a BOFA Patron?
