National Nutrition Week SummaryNational Nutrition Week this year ran from the 13th – 19th October The theme of the week was “embrace your veg waste”. We encouraged all Australians to get creative with their veggies and think about ways you could introduce more veges into their meals. The campaign was a huge success including our division hosting 2 cooking workshops throughout the week. One workshop was conducted in partnership with Logan City Council, where our Dietitian Rosie facilitated a ‘Fast Fresh and Fabulous’ themed workshop. Together the participants whipped up recipes including Fattoush salad, Salmon noodle salad and Pumpkin and chickpea fritters. In keeping with the Nutrition Week theme, the recipes included veggies in them and were thoroughly enjoyed by participants as can be seen in the photos below!
Latest ResearchDiet quality is more strongly related to food skills rather than cooking skills confidenceThe results of a national cross-sectional survey have been published in the Nutrition & Dietetics: Journal of the Dietitians Association of Australia. This study (1) aimed to investigate the relationship between food and cooking skills and diet quality in Australian adults. In this study, cooking skills were considered as a set of physical or mechanical skills used in food preparation such as chopping and mixing, in contrast to food skills which included the wider components of home meal preparation such as meal planning, budgeting and food shopping. It was concluded that strategies to improve food skills confidence could potentially enhance diet quality and variety to a greater degree than focusing on cooking skills alone. However, development of both skills sets should be encouraged within education programs and targeted to differing aspects of diet quality. Tailoring interventions to specific population groups with low confidence in their skills, including younger adults and males, may facilitate individuals in making healthy food choices. Take a look at the abstract of this study here. How can NAQ Nutrition help? We have a great resource around food skills which includes some tips on how to plan ahead and shop wisely for food. This video displays eight teenagers turning up to a restaurant for what they believed was the start of a social experiment. Little did they know, that it was really the end of it. Throughout the week they had been targeted with a host of advertising techniques to highlight the power the food marketing industry has over their choices.
