THE WEEK AHEAD at the UN SECURITY COUNCIL

12-16 February 2018

On Tuesday (13 February), Security Council members expect to receive a briefing on a report from the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) on the implementation of resolution 2341 concerning critical infrastructure from Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra (Peru), the committee’s chair.

Also on Tuesday, the Council will be briefed by High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman on Myanmar. This will be followed by consultations where, in addition to Grandi and Feltman, representatives from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and possibly OCHA will be present to answer questions.

On Wednesday (14 February), UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura is expected to brief on the political process in Syria. The briefing will be followed by consultations.

There will also be a briefing, followed by consultations, on Wednesday on the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS). The Special Representative and head of UNIOGBIS, Modibo Touré, is expected to brief, while Ambassador Mauro Vieira (Brazil), chair of the Guinea-Bissau configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission, is also likely to brief.

At the subsidiary body level, there will be a joint meeting on Monday (12 February) of the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee; the 1267/1989/2253 ISIL (Da’esh) & Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee; and the 1988 Afghanistan Sanctions Committee. Council members will be briefed during the meeting by Yevgeniy Sysoyev, the Director of the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Also on Monday, there will be a joint meeting of the 1267/1989/2253 ISIL (Da’esh) & Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee and the 1988 Afghanistan Sanctions Committee on the ISIL (Da’esh) & Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team’s report on its visit to Afghanistan in late 2017.
