Kingswood eNews

Kingswood College Where Potential Soars Kingswood College

Message from the President

In this edition of the Wyvernian News we herald the extension of the Wyvernian Association membership by including a 'past teachers and staff' chapter.  To kick off the addition of this chapter we have been lucky enough to catch up with Mr George Wilson.

Mr Wilson was a much-loved teacher who started in 1958 seeing changes from boarding school to boys' school, and finally to co-educational school.  His contribution has had a profound impact on many who were lucky enough to have him as a teacher.  Some may remember Mr Wilson’s ‘sunrise smile’ and some of his catch-cries – neither a borrower, nor a lender be!  As one of his past students I am very pleased to be able to feature him in this edition.

November 25 saw the launch of the ‘White Ribbon’ campaign for awareness and action for violence against women.  Michelle Noon (Class of 2001) is a Wyvernian and the Executive Officer Victoria and Tasmania of White Ribbon.  This edition looks at some of Michelle’s memories of Junior School at Kingswood and tells us a bit about her journey.

We are also fortunate to be featuring Samuele Smith who is from the class of 2012.  This inspirational Wyvernian has been committed and dedicated in pursuing his dream to work within the food industry, and has recently been recognised for his abilities.  A recent recipient of the Apprentice of the Year award in his category, we take the time to get to know a bit more about Samuele.

In November we presented the Wyvernian Award for general excellence to two students who have excelled.  Congratulations to Lewis Ironside (Year 6) and Phoebe Wells (Year 10) for their hard work!

Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) – Winners!  After 14 years of competing the Kingswood College HPV team have won the event.  Building on years of hard work from our previous teams and expertly guided by Mr ‘Robbo’ Robinson the team delivered a hard-fought win will go to the next as defending champions.  Well done!

The 2013 reunions are completed and we are now preparing for 2014!  Dates are presented in this newsletter.  We are in the process of updating and reviewing everyone’s contact details.  If you haven’t been contacted already, please make contact by updating you details online and joining us on Facebook.  Any assistance that you can provide in getting in touch with your fellow classmates is appreciated.

Things to look out for:
• The new Facebook page has been launched.
• Plans for an annual networking breakfast.

If you would like to be involved in preparation of your reunion, assist with tracking down contact details, know of someone you would like us to feature, or just want to let us know what is happening or be involved please get in touch.

Please consider!  Kingswood School Council is seeking expressions of interest to join the school board.  Expressions from Wyvernians are most welcome.  Details are within this edition.

Samuele cooking his way to the top

Samuele (Sam) Smith is a new Wyvernian from the Class of 2012 who was recently named Apprentice of the Year for his work in hospitality. Sam says that he decided to be a chef in Grade 3 in primary school. 'We all had to choose one of three activities to do weekly, and I chose cooking. Being the only boy in the cooking group it was strange but I loved food ever since. There is just something about food which is so comforting and brings people together, which is what I love.'

Graduating in the Class of 2012, Sam was offered an apprenticeship at the RACV City Club, a much sought-after position. After winning in the 'first year' section at regional and state finals, Sam was invited to join the Victorian culinary team at the national Apprentice of the Year competition in Canberra. Once in Canberra, competitors were given a certain amount of money to buy ingredients (keeping the receipts to prove they were within the budget). The competition involved cooking an omelette and serving three main course dishes, all in an hour.

White Ribbon Day 25 November 2013

This year White Ribbon Australia launches its ‘Australia, land of secrets’ campaign.

Currently in Australia one woman a week is killed by a current or former partner. It’s shocking, but this is just one tragic part of the story.

The ‘Australia, land of secrets’ campaign calls on men, women and the whole community to help uncover some of Australia’s secrets and help stop men’s violence against women.

As part of this campaign men and women are sharing their own, personal experiences of this issue and encouraging others to do same.

Kingswood College Council Expression of Interest

Kingswood College Council is seeking expressions of interest from dedicated and suitably qualified people who may be interested to serve on the College Council.

Being a member of Council provides an opportunity to significantly contribute to the development and strategic management of the College.

The Council is made up of 12 people of whom four are Uniting Church Synod appointees.

As a result of recent retirements Council needs to appoint at least one new member who has a background in strategic financial management.  One of the two positions is also a Synod position.  In order to qualify as a Synod appointee candidates will need to be a regular attender of a Uniting Church community.  These attributes are not mutually exclusive.

Applicants of all backgrounds and skills are encouraged to apply.  Appointments will be made based on the ‘best fit’ to meet Council’s current skill requirements.  Council would hope that any person who does apply and is not successful, would make themselves available for future consideration and/or to provide assistance on specific projects/issues.

The College Council fulfils a strategic management role relating to all functions of the College, and is ultimately responsible to provide the means for a whole and rounded education for its students.  It is primarily responsible for:

• setting the direction and vision for the College;
• appointing the Principal;
• ensuring that the finances are properly maintained and the College is meeting all financial obligations;
• ensuring the welfare of the students and staff; and
• developing policies, by-laws and regulations for the general conduct of the affairs of the Council.

If you are interested, we encourage you to contact us. Further details of the process can be found by downloading the expression of interest document. Please send us a CV covering all requested information.  If you are unsure and would like to chat about your interest please contact Stuart Castle  Council Representative.

Wyvernian profile - George Wilson

George Wilson joined Kingswood College (then Box Hill Grammar) in 1958 to fill three roles including classroom teacher in the Junior School, teaching English and Humanities-related subjects. He also shared responsibility for the Boarding House and supervising the boarders, and took over from Rupert Brunning as sports master.

During his 36 years at Kingswood College, George saw many changes, from living on-site with the boarders under C.F. Walker when the school had 200 - 250 students, through a period as a boys' school and the end of boarding, to the reinvigoration of co-education and the growth of Kingswood College.
