Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater Project

Kia ora from the Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater Project team.

We’re well underway installing the Heathcote Valley pipeline that will connect Lyttelton Harbour’s wastewater system with the main Christchurch treatment plant in Bromley.

So far we've laid 1.6 kilometres of the pipeline and on track to complete the project in early 2020. We would like to take the opportunity to thank the community for their patience while we complete the Heathcote Valley pipeline.

Our contractors, Fulton Hogan, are working hard to minimise any disruption this work is causing you, so if you have any concerns please come and have a chat. You can ring Fulton Hogan on 0800 342 48457 or call Council on 03 941 8999.

Across the hill in Lyttelton, our Simeon Quay site is taking shape. The Diamond Harbour pump station is set for commissioning shortly and our team are looking at alternative options to access the Governors Bay foreshore track to complete the pipeline installation works.

Thank you all for your patience as we work towards ending the routine discharge of treated wastewater into Lyttelton Harbour.

Wet well construction ramps up on Simeon Quay

We have made good progress with the construction of the wet well and have installed all reinforcing into the foundations. Toward the end of next month, we expect to start on sewer, water and stormwater pipes.

We're planning some night works around to locate services from Sunday 15 September for three nights and there will be light, noise, machinery and crews working during the night.

Once we pinpoint the location of these services, we'll be able to safely install the sewer, water and stormwater pipes. We'll do our best to complete the noisiest part of the work early in the evening. Thanks for your patience while we build the Simeon Quay pump station.

New buffer tank for Cashin Quay

We have installed and tested a new buffer tank here, which is capable of storing 600,000 litres of waste and will be used to control flows during high rainfall events. We are now completing civil works and will begin the structural steel installation once we've completed the mechanical pipework. Testing of this station will begin in October 2019.

Diamond Harbour power works complete

Power changeover works are now complete at Diamond Harbour and work on a new electrical building has begun. Going forward, we will be installing the mechanical pipe work and drainage on-site.

Slips slows Governors Bay foreshore track work

Planned work to install a new power supply cable and pipeline between the Jetty Road pump station and the new Governors Bay pump station has been delayed due to a landslip, which has caused Jetty Road to close for safety reasons. We are currently looking at new ways to progress here and will alert those in the area of our work before we start.

Mauger Drive

Works on Mauger Drive are now ending with the pipe installed, trench backfilled and road reinstated.  Works will be completed by 13 September. Ground conditions and wet weather presented several challenges to the site team but we worked hard to complete the works without incident. Last month, the team were welcomed to site with balloons and inspirational messages from the residents. This small gesture created big smiles :-)

Work ramps up on Port Hills Road

Works on Port Hills Road began on 2 September 2019 from the intersection of Mauger Drive and Port Hills Road. We will continue to open the road up in 200m sections as we continue to lay the pipeline towards the roundabout.

During the hours of 7am – 6pm, a stop/go system will be in place on Port Hills Road from the corner of Mauger Dr to the roundabout covering the length of the active site. At night, the road will be returned to two lanes. As the works, progress the traffic management will move along Port Hills Road to minimise disruption. All residents affected will receive a works notice. We encourage any residents with property access requirements to call Fulton Hogan on 0800 342 48457 (0800 FHCIVILS) or 027 604 9335.

From the roundabout to the playground one lane traffic will be in place at all times. This will be managed by traffic lights. Where the road narrows, the road will be closed off and detours in place down Flinders Road. Traffic management will be in place so you'll know where to go and we’ll work with residents to ensure they have access to their houses during this time.

Don’t worry if the road looks rough – our teams will be constantly inspecting the surface and filling potholes.

Shops are open on Port Hills Road

Access to the local shops will remain open at all times while we lay the pipeline along Port Hills Road. You won't be able to park on the road, but there's parking available onsite at the Maltworks shopping complex. Thanks for your patience as we complete the Heathcote Valley Pipeline.

Paddocks pipeline install underway

Works in the paddocks have mobilised again with the installation of 150 metres of pipe. We have installed the first concrete slab and drainage ditch to protect the pipeline and provide cover. With the wet weather, the dewatering tanks have been working overtime. Works here will continue into the Summer months as we prepare for the large Horizontal Drilling team to drill under the Heathcote River and the final connection in 2020.

Once complete, all of Lyttelton’s Harbour’s wastewater will be redirected to the main Christchurch wastewater treatment plant in Bromley. This will help improve the health of our harbour for current and future generations to enjoy. You can find more information about the Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater Project on Council website.
