CPC Hosts Community Partners and Supporters at Appreciation Reception On December 9th, CPC held an Appreciation Reception at Essex Market to express our gratitude to donors and partners and to highlight the impact of their contributions to the community. It was our first in-person reception in two years. The reception was attended by more than 200 guests, including Senator John Liu, Assembly Member Peter Abbate Jr., the Commissioners of the NYC Administration for Children’s Services, Department for the Aging (DFTA), Department of Social Services (DSS), and Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), Nelson Louis of the Ong Family Foundation (CPC Mission Partner), and other foundation leaders. We also introduced the honorees for our Lunar New Year Benefit: Derek Chan of Greater Hudson Financial, NYC Child Care Resource and Referral Consortium, and CPC Services for Families with Special Needs in Queens. EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong.
CPC’s Adult Literacy Class Class Visits ManhattanOn December 8th, CPC’s Adult Literacy Class celebrated the holidays by visiting iconic Manhattan landmarks, including the main branch of the New York Public Library, Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center, and more. Before their trip, our instructor Nick Furio taught students about various holiday sites and vocabulary. Students were then asked to locate the sights and take selfies with them on their scavenger hunt.
Director of Childhood Development Services Mary Cheng Named a 2023 PASEsetter Award WinnerOn February 28th,2023, Mary Cheng, CPC Director of Childhood Development Services, will receive the 2023 PASEsetter Award from the Partnership for After School Education (PASE). This award recognizes exceptional afterschool educators whose commitment, energy, and creativity have made an indelible impact on the children and youth of New York City.
CPC Provides Childcare Assistance to Low-Income Families with Undocumented ChildrenOn December 14th, Mayor Eric Adams unveiled Promise NYC, a program that will provide subsidized childcare to low-income, undocumented families who are otherwise ineligible for federal subsidies due to their immigration status. CPC was entrusted with launching the initiative alongside three other community-based organizations. Each organization is responsible for a specific borough, with CPC focusing on Queens.
CPC Youth Celebrates New Year's Eve in Times SquareOn December 31st, a group of CPC youth from New Utrecht High School's ACE Program and IS 220's Beacon Community Center, along with their counterparts from other community-based organizations, were invited to watch the New Year's Eve ball drop in Times Square by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development and the Police Athletic League. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age.
CPC Chinatown Senior Center Opens at 55 Chrystie Street On November 21st, CPC Chinatown Senior Center began its first day of operations at 55 Chrystie Street. This is its temporary location for the next five years while 70 Mulberry Street is being rebuilt following a fire in January 2020. Thank you to the New York City Department for the Aging for supporting us throughout this difficult time.
CPC Open Door Senior Center Hosts a Press Conference by Senator Gillibrand On a New Federal Bill On December 16th, CPC Open Door Senior Center hosted a press conference by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to announce federal legislation that would modernize the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to better protect beneficiaries from having their benefits stolen through identity theft and skimming scams. CPC Joins the Relaunch of the Fair Pay for Home Care Campaign On December 13th, CPC joined the New York Caring Majority to relaunch the Fair Pay for Home Care campaign. CPC, represented by Civic Engagement and Training Manager Caroline Scown, joined older adults, people with disabilities, home care workers, advocates, home care agencies, and elected officials to continue advocating for a fair and equitable wage for home care workers.
CPC Hosts 2022 Holiday Party On December 14th, CPC hosted a holiday party for over 200 members of the CPC team, Board, and Leadership Council at Bowery Beer Garden in Manhattan. Guests enjoyed food, drinks, music, activities, and raffles. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, meet new faces, and celebrate our collective accomplishments.
CPC Board Member Christopher Kuo Featured on Asian American Life On December 13th, CPC Board Member Christopher Kuo and his mother Michelle Chen Kuo were featured on Asian American Life, a multiple Emmy-nominated news magazine show. The story shares their family history, music careers, and charitable efforts through Two Piano Journey. Click here for the full story.
CPC Supports New Law to Better Protect New Yorkers from Discrimination On December 29th, CPC Chief Program Officer Edgar Pereira spoke at a press conference on a bill signed by Governor Kathy Hochul that protects New Yorkers of all backgrounds from discrimination. He thanked Governor Hochul, Senator John Liu, and Assembly Member Catalina Cruz and highlighted the importance of treating all New Yorkers equally, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.
