Mozambique, still reeling from the damage wrought by Cyclone Idai, has been hit by another brutal storm front, Cyclone Kenneth. Research shows that these tropical cyclones will become increasingly common in the years ahead. Chris Changwe Nshimbi warns that as extreme weather becomes the norm across Southern Africa, countries and regional organisations will need to pull together to properly manage the resulting disasters. For their part, Seth Asare Okyere, Matthew Abunyewah and Stephen Kofi Diko suggest that cities in Africa could harness the lessons from a Japanese system of community involvement to help citizens deal with the realities of a changing climate.

Shifting climates and rising temperatures don’t just affect human beings. Shüné Oliver explains how temperature can have a significant effect on the life cycle of mosquitoes that transmit malaria. And Victor Ongoma explores the many risks posed by changes in Kenya’s annual rainfall patterns, particularly in the agricultural sector.
