CPC Open Door Senior Center Celebrates 50th AnniversaryOn September 9th, CPC Open Door Senior Center in Chinatown celebrated its 50th anniversary with community members, city officials, board members, and staff. The celebration featured a traditional Chinese lion dance performance and a singing and dancing show performed by older adults from the center.The event was attended by Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams-Isom, NYC Department for the Aging Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, NYS Senator Brian Kavanagh, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Council Member Gale Brewer, and Congressional candidate Dan Goldman.EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong.
Adult Literacy Class Returns In-person at Queens Community CenterOn September 6th, CPC Adult Literacy Program resumed in-person classes at the Queens Community Center in Flushing. Students were excited to learn new English vocabulary and grammar, practice listening and speaking skills, and connect with classmates.
CPC Receives Donation from the Mary Li Hsu Charitable Trust On September 19th, CPC welcomed Ronald Hsu, brother of late Mary Li Hsu, for a site visit at the Open Door Senior Center. CPC was named a recipient of the Mary Li Hsu Charitable Trust. This funding will be used to support the Community Safety and Belonging Initiative, focusing on safety educational workshops and food distribution. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age.
CPC Distributes Mooncakes to the Community CPC received donations of mooncakes from several organizations and individuals. These mooncakes were then distributed to community members to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Special thanks to Heart of Dinner, Flushing Chinese Business Association, Royal Care, and members of the CPC Leadership Council, including Lai Ling Li and Christopher Kuo.
CPC Hosts Family and Friends Day in Prospect Park On September 24th, hundreds of staff, board members, and community members joined CPC's Family and Friends Day to celebrate the start of fall and gather for fun activities in Prospect Park. Participants came together to enjoy the beautiful park, free food, art sessions, and a self-defense class.
Brooklyn Senior Services Hosts Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration On September 9th, CPC Brooklyn Senior Services partnered with Wellcare, UnitedHealthcare, Agewell, NYU Langone, and elected officials to host a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration with over 200 community members. There were performances, raffles, and mooncake giveaways.
CPC Brooklyn Senior Services Joins CaringKind's Annual Alzheimer's Walk On September 25th, over 40 older adult members of CPC Brooklyn Senior Services took part in the annual Alzheimer's Walk on Coney Island to promote awareness for the Alzheimer's caregiving campaign. CPC raised more than $2,000 to support CaringKind's mission. COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTWe empower New Yorkers to represent and to advocate for themselves and their communities because their leadership is essential for positive—and lasting—social change. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence.
CPC Seniors Rally for Council Member Hudson's Aging Legislative Package at City Hall On September 7th, CPC led a group of over 150 older adults from our Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens Senior Centers to join a rally at City Hall in support of the Aging Legislative Package sponsored by Council Member Crystal Hudson, Chair of the Aging Committee. Peter Cheng, Director of CPC Nan Shan Senior Center, urged New York City Council to pass the package to ensure all older adults can age in place with dignity.
President and CEO Wayne Ho Speaks at the Nonprofit FundCon On September 22th, CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho joined leaders in the non-profit field for a panel discussion at the 5th Nonprofit FundCon hosted by NYNMedia. He emphasized the importance of representing the voices of staff and community members in all materials, and also provided suggestions on how to be culturally competent when communicating with supporters from various backgrounds.
CPC Joins AAPI Leaders and Council Speaker Adams to Discuss Community Issues On September 20th, CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho joined Asian American nonprofit and community leaders to discuss critical issues affecting the community at a meeting hosted by Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. He emphasized that CPC, as part of the APA VOICE Redistricting Task Force, supports the Unity Map that reflects the 2020 Census data and the growth in the Asian population in New York City. CPC Statement on Recent Street Scam CPC would like to inform the community of a scam in Brooklyn. Individuals are posing as CPC employees and have had tables set up near 8th Avenue in Brooklyn, where they are charging community members to fill out housing applications for low-income apartments that were allegedly made accessible through a lottery system. Once the community members are "selected” through the alleged lottery, the individuals then follow-up to demand an additional fee.
