Howdy friends!

I'm off to Sydney later this week to speak at this year's Web Directions. Really excited to meet some new faces and hopefully (re)connect with Offscreen readers! I still feel quite unprepared so I better make this short and go back to rehearsing my talk...

This week I'm glad to have Sticker Mule as our sponsor. Once again, I'm not charging them for the slot. Instead, we decided to give away three $50 gift cards to buy stickers or any of their other products. To win one, just mention The Modern Desk in a tweet. I'll randomly pick three winners by the end of the week.

This Weekʼs Line-Up

A smarter charging cable
01

The UsBidi is a USB charging cable with a few additional features: it will stop the charging cycle when your phone is fully charged, keeping your battery healthy. It has an indicator light at the top of the plug to show you the charging status, and it comes with a built-in switch to disable the syncing of data so you can use that capacity for faster charging instead. Looks like a great idea – currently on Kickstarter and already fully funded.

An app to track habits
02

Balanced is another, very simple app that allows you to keep track of things you should do more regularly, like meditating or exercising.

A hazy wall clock (duh!?)
03

I don't even know why exactly, but this hazy wall clock somehow caught my attention. I'm usually not a big fan of making things less practical by adding novel features, but there is something mystical about reading the time this way.

An tool for sketches and mind maps
04

When I was still freelancing for clients, mind-mapping ideas was a powerful tool to unravel the complexity of bigger projects. Sketchboard makes this process even easier by allowing you to mix flowcharts with mind maps, free-hand sketches with images, etc.

A smart light that imitates the sun
05

"Sunn is a smart light fixture that brings the changing sun indoors." I've seen a similar, non-smart but solar-connected light at a friend's place recently and initially thought it was a skylight. (Here's a similar product.) Both are a great idea to create the impression of natural light in a dark room.

A virtual computer you rent by the hour
06

I love the idea behind Paperspace: set up a virtual computer from anywhere in minutes, pay only for the time you are using it, and access it through any web browser. This could be great as a shared machine to test websites on different operating systems. (Still in beta!)
