Miegunyah Public Lecture with Katalin Bársony
Tuesday 8 October, 6.30pm – 7.30pm


In this public lecture Kindred Spirits: Romani European and Aboriginal Australian cultural practice Ms Katalin Bársony will explore contemporary Romani cultural life and human rights reclamation in Europe, extending her experience to diverse Aboriginal peoples’ cultural practice in Australia. As the Executive Director of the Romedia Foundation in Hungary, a public intellectual and filmmaker, Bársony profiles the place of community voice in film and television and of cultural representation more broadly.

India Residency Exhibition
30 August - 29 September


Ghar ghar ki baat/Tales from two homes presents work by three contemporary Indian artists: Neha Choksi (Bangalore), Rakhi Peswani (Mumbai) and Brendan Fernandes (Toronto/New York), alongside Melbourne artists Kate Daw, Emily Floyd and John Meade. This follows the exhibition Sleep on the Left Side in New Delhi late last year and considers the fluid nature of home and connectedness.

University of Melbourne Orchestra
Friday 4 October, 7.30pm


In this concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre conducted by Fabian Russell, the University of Melbourne Orchestra performs music from three of the most important composers of the Germanic tradition. The program begins with a performance of Brahms’ Academic Festival Orchestra. Exciting young oboist Jasper Ly will perform Richard Strauss’ Oboe Concerto, before the concert concludes with a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No.2.

Women and the Silent Screen
30 September - 2 October


The VCA in collaboration with the Gender Studies Program at the University of Melbourne is hosting the seventh international Women and the Silent Screen conference. Themed this year to ‘Performance and the Emotions’, the conference constitutes the largest and most prestigious global meeting in the field of gender and early film, attracting outstanding scholars working across a broad range of disciplines.

Davidson to lead new research initiative

The University has recruited one of the world’s most respected performance and music psychology academics, Professor Jane Davidson, who will serve as the inaugural head of the University’s major research initiative in the Creative and Performing Arts, based in the Faculty of VCA & MCM. Professor Davidson said she was very much looking forward to leading the new initiative and cementing strong relationships within the national and international Arts communities.

Schools Engagement Project with The Smith Family

The MCM’s pilot engagement project with The Smith Family, delivered throughout Term 3 2013, has seen a number of staff and recent graduates working with students on a weekly basis from Bendigo and Ballarat secondary schools. The program, known as SmArts, has featured a wide variety of sessions from ensemble work and improvisation workshops to performance preparation classes. The project culminated in a gala concert at Melba Hall last Friday.

Travelling scholarship provides inspiration

A new $10,000 travelling scholarship provided by the Majlis Pty Ltd gives a VCA third year art student the opportunity to travel overseas at the conclusion of their undergraduate studies. Its inaugural winner, Miss Grace Wood, is interested in the way Buddhism influences contemporary art and she plans to use the scholarship to travel through China, Tibet and Burma, before embarking on Honours study at the VCA in 2014.

Presented by Union House Theatre and written by William Shakespeare; directed by and starring VCA alumni Matt Scholten and Tom Gutteridge respectively.   A ship of fools and royalty comes crashing into Prospero’s life and his only companion, his sequestered daughter Miranda, discovers that her father believes in magic, spirits and, thankfully, forgiveness.
