iGEM team captures top prize in North American synthetic biology competition

The University of Lethbridge has further cemented its reputation as a leader in the teaching and research of synthetic biology by capturing first place at the 2013 North American iGEM Regional Jamboree in Toronto, Ont. this past weekend.

The competition, held at the University of Toronto, featured teams from across Canada and the United States. The U of L team of Dustin Smith, Graeme Glaister, Jenna Friedt, Suneet Kharey, Harland Brandon and Zak Stinson will now move on to the international competition, which will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, Mass. Water researchers to collaborate with Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair

Dr. Bryan Brooks, a professor of environmental science and biomedical studies at Baylor University's College of Arts & Sciences (Waco, Texas) will be getting his feet wet in more ways than one as he begins a research term with colleagues at the University of Lethbridge’s Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building (AWESB).

As the recently-appointed Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair, Brooks will arrive at the U of L in January 2014 to work on projects of common importance to communities on both sides of the Canada-US border.

Though they are more than 3,000 km apart, there are many parallels between the semi-arid environment of southern Alberta and the areas of Texas that Brooks studies. Learn more here.

In-service computer training for faculty & staff: New courses start in October!

Information Technology Services (ITS) - Client Services will be offering a series of  training sessions for University of Lethbridge faculty and staff members.

New sessions kick off  Oct. 3, and include Intermediate Excel, OneNote,  Microsoft Publisher and more.

These sessions are being presented to provide an overview of features associated with commonly used computer programs. The sessions are strictly overviews of concepts and full courses will be offered at a later date.

Morrison, Bowie to be honoured at Alumni Celebration

The University of Lethbridge Alumni Association and Senate will be holding a special Alumni Celebration Saturday, Oct. 19 at 12 p.m in the Markin Hall Atrium, at which they will be honouring
Drs. Robert Morrison (BASc '83) and Gary Bowie.

Morrison, pictured above, is the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. He is known for a boundless energy and enthusiasm for English literature, and has established his position as an outstanding scholar and educator.

Gary Bowie is a founding U of L faculty member, and enjoyed a 30-year career at the University, spending time as athletic director, professor and coach. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he also made significant volunteer contributions at both the local and provincial level. Learn more here.

2013 Gairdner Lecture: Adult Neural Stem Cells: From Basic Science to Therapeutic Applications

University of Lethbridge faculty and students, along with select southern Alberta high school students, will have the unique opportunity to experience a lecture by Gairdner International Award winner Dr. Samuel Weiss, Monday, Oct. 21.

The Gairdner Foundation Speaker Event will include a lecture for the area’s elite high school students, a lecture for U of L faculty and undergraduate students, as well as a host of interactive science activities designed to engage the visiting students as well as showcase the research activities taking place on campus.

“It is very exciting to be able to bring a Gairdner International Award winner to campus,” says University of Lethbridge President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mike Mahon. “The fact that many people with our Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience also work closely with Dr. Weiss, makes it even more fitting.“ Learn more here.

Cloud computing offered at no cost to Alberta startups and researchers

Up to one year of free access to cloud computing is now available to Alberta researchers and entrepreneurs through a pilot program designed to advance the use of technology in the province.

Research and education organizations, and entrepreneurs, are the target users of the cloud services being offered by Alberta’s not-for-profit advanced technology agency, Cybera. The service, called the Rapid Access Cloud, is available for prototyping and research. Get the details here.

Volunteer for the Edacity Xtreme Challenge, a science-based “Amazing Race” for high school students that takes place on campus on Saturday, October 26.

There are lots of opportunities to help out with registration, running a specific challenge or offering general support. To learn more about the event and volunteering, please visit the event section of the Edacity  website

Preventing Violence on Post-Secondary Campuses: Focus Groups, Safety Audits coming soon

The Student Success Centre is hosting a series of focus groups between Oct. 1 and Nov. 20 to  gain input from students about gender-based violence issues, with the goal of creating a student-led action plan to prevent violence on the U of L campus.  If you know a student who would be interested in participating, please refer them to this website.
