A Message from the Chief Executive

The recent release of the Northern Australia and the Agricultural Competitiveness White Papers provide for key policy and funding commitments for our regional growth.
Funding announcements for key infrastructure included the Hann Highway sealing and Nullinga Dam feasibility – both of these list on our Region’s Top 8 Infrastructure initiatives.
Advance Cairns will continue to work with regional partners to realise these commitments early.

With the Prime Minister in Cairns to launch the Northern Australia Alliance and returning to launch the Northern Australia White Paper, our region has been very much in the spotlight. This demonstrates the real opportunities in Tropical North Queensland, and how we have supported national development through our work with the Northern Australia White Paper development and initiatives such as the Northern Australia Alliance. We look forward to continuing to build our collaboration across Northern Australia to bring the aspirations of our region to reality.

Locally, we welcome the Cairns Regional Council’s proposed changes to the draft Cairns Regional Planning Scheme. These changes provide for balanced growth and development whilst maintaining our unique style and character. Advance Cairns has been advocating for a number of these change to support city growth and tropical character.

Planning Scheme Changes Consultation

Council is now seeking public comment on the future look of the Cairns city centre and North Cairns, following amendments to building height and design policies within the draft Planning Scheme.  It has been proposed that the existing prescribed height limits be amended and that the aircraft Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) be formalised as the defining factor on building heights in the city centre and parts of North Cairns.
Council is also looking to introduce new design controls citing ‘Tropical Urbanism’ as a key objective.  This will provide guidelines for city design that will reflect the character and lifestyle of Cairns. The Tropical Urbanism controls will promote signature tropical design elements such as vertical landscaping, street canopies and active street frontages that create cool, shady outdoor areas, reflecting the natural rainforest canopy.
