On his first full day in office, US President Donald Trump signed two executive orders with global ramifications: he officially pulled the US out of the Trans Pacific Partnership and reinstated the "global gag rule", which cuts off funding to NGOs that provide abortion services or advocacy.

As the remaining signatories scramble to salvage what they can of the trade deal, Amitendu Palit asks whether the TPP can survive Trump. And Patricia Schwerdtle notes that the president's attempt to reduce abortions will actually cause more.
