World Wine NEWSLETTER UPDATE 22 November Tuesday 22 November 2011
Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2010

The Eden Valley, adjacent to the Barossa Valley in South Australia, is home to two of Australia's most revered wineries, Yalumba and Henschke, who are now being joined by some outstanding smaller wineries, including Torzi Matthews.

Part of the joy of selling wine is offering really special wines at really low prices. Offfering the Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2010 at just $16.15 a bottle (along with a special offer - more below) is an example of what defines what we do.

With World Wine offering you nearly two thousand new wines every year, most of our newsletters discuss a dozen or more wines - in rare instances though we find something, to borrow from one of the reviews below, of such striking value that we focus on just the one wine.

The reviews, first, of this Shiraz - reviews we respect from reviewers we respect:and then the special offer with this deal.

David Ridge The Adelaide Review Sept 2011:

Bargain Reds.

"A striking value red whose quality and price needed a double take. I haven’t seen this wine before, so I don’t know if it’s a freak, but it’s hard to forget. Not a beast, but rather a stylish, lithe, persistent and remarkably long-tasting red. A very good, more normal vintage in the Eden Valley has presented typical fruit characters of raspberry, cherry and mocha, which obviously really skillful and educated winemaking have shaped and seasoned a little with older, pre-used oak to leave a natural and bright looking wine. It’s no good trying to find faults or shortcomings in this; they’re just not there. That length reveals only gentle and persistently delicious flavours and a nice little grip. Better get some of this."

Ralph Kyte - Powell The Age Epicure August 2011:

"First Class. It opens with high-toned raw-fruit character but, with air, plum, blackberry, spice and warm-earth aromas develop. The palate is medium-bodied, smooth and ripe, with mellow, fine tannins."

Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front June 2011:

"This release is a lovely drink, no doubting it. It’s fleshy and dark berried and yet bright with flavour. Blueberries and mineral, tar and blackberry. It’s almost a touch beery and almost peppery too – but not quite either. It needs time to settle further but the fruit is exuberant and the tannin fruity. I like the poise of this wine. And the flavour."

Andrew Caillard MW June 2011:

"Intense dark cherry, sage and aniseed aromas with underlying savoury complexity. Finished chalky and long. Really very good."

and all this for just $16.15 a bottle in a dozen purchase ... and, with every case purchase you will also receive another bottle from Torzi Matthews - a free bottle of 500ml Una Wild Olive Oil, with an RRP of $20. And we can't pass up the chance to share our tasting note on the olive oil:

"Complex aromas of ripe fruit and confectionery. Richly flavoured with outstanding persistence of fruit and pepperyness" (from the Olives South Australia Awards).
