Congratulations to Mary Cheng on Winning the 2023 PASEsetter AwardOn February 28th, CPC celebrated with Mary Cheng, Director of Childhood Development Services, who was honored as one of five recipients of the 2023 PASEsetter Award. This award recognizes afterschool educators who have made an indelible impact on the children and youth of New York City. CPC now has five PASEsetter Award winners, including Lois Lee, Director of CPC Queens Early Childhood Center; Don Kao, Director of Project Reach; Amy Latorres, Director of Education and Career Services; Mitch Wu, Director of CPC Queens Community Services; and Mary Cheng. EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong.
CPC Project Gateway Members Embark on a Visit to Mercy CollegeOn February 21st, CPC's Project Gateway members had the opportunity to explore Mercy College's Dobbs Ferry Campus. The students were thrilled to visit the campus and gain a deeper understanding of the college experience and the school's programs. One of the highlights of the visit was a guided tour of the college's clinical simulation rooms, where the students were introduced to the nursing program and the potential career opportunities that are available in this field.
Alice Wong Shares Best Practices at the 2023 Nonprofit BoardCon On February 28th, CPC’s Chief of Staff Alice Wong spoke on a panel at New York Nonprofit Media’s 2023 Nonprofit BoardCon. Alice discussed the importance of recruiting and retaining millennial board members. The panelists highlighted millennials’ technological skills, social media skills, and their ability to provide solutions for today’s issues. CPC's NY Chinatown Older Adult Center Relocates to 55 Chrystie Street On February 3rd, CPC's NY Chinatown Older Adult Center held a ceremony to celebrate the center's new location at 55 Chrystie Street. This center continues to provide older adults with congregate meals, education and recreation activities, and case assistance services while the original site at 70 Mulberry Street is being reconstructed.
CPC Joins Partners and Elected Officials in Elmhurst's Lunar New Year Festivities On February 11th, CPC, along with partners and elected officials, gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year at CC Moore Homestead Park in Elmhurst, Queens. Our Queens Special Needs staff and program participants also participated in the event. The highlight of the event was a captivating lion dance performance that left a lasting impression on the attendees. CPC’s 58th Annual Lunar New Year Benefit Raises $380,000 for Community Services On February 16th, CPC celebrated our 58th Annual Lunar New Year Benefit in Chinatown. We were honored to welcome Governor Kathy Hochul and many other elected officials to our event. Congratulations again to our honorees: President of Greater Hudson Financial Derek Chan, NYC Child Care Resource and Referral Consortium, and CPC Services for Families with Special Needs in Queens.
CPC Supports the Early Voting Act to Increase Voter Accessibility and Election Efficiency On February 23rd, CPC's Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer, Carlyn Cowen, spoke in support of the Early Voting Act during a press conference led by Representative Dan Goldman. The proposed legislation aims to improve the election process by mandating a minimum 14-day period for in-person early voting for federal elections. It also seeks to enhance accessibility to polling places and mandate the processing and scanning of ballots at least 14 days before Election Day.
CPC Stands in Solidarity with Victims of Attack at Bay Ridge Vigil On February 20th, CPC joined a community vigil in Bay Ridge to honor the victims and those affected by a recent violent attack, in which a man driving a U-Haul truck deliberately drove towards pedestrians and cyclists. Steve Mei, Director of CPC Brooklyn Community Services, spoke at the vigil and urged the city to invest in mental health services for older adults.
CPC Holds 5th Annual State Advocacy Days in Albany and Virtually On February 27th, CPC held our 5th Annual State Advocacy Day in Albany, followed by a virtual event on February 28th. More than 125 staff and community members met with over 40 New York State legislators, where they shared personal stories and advocated for a budget that lifts up AAPI, immigrant, and low-income New Yorkers. These priorities include advocating for increased wages for human services and home care workers, fully funding critical human services, investing $66.5 million in AAPI organizations via the AAPI Equity Budget, and more.
