The ideas of an ancient Greek woman – Aspasia of Miletus – are likely at the roots of Western philosophy, according to new research. Interpreting scraps of ancient texts and philosophy anew, Armand d'Angour argues that this influential and fiercely intelligent Athenian, long dismissed by history as a brothel-keeper or courtesan, influenced many of Socrates’s ideas on beauty, life, and love.

The space weather caused by the sun’s activity can cause great damage to services on which we rely, such as satellite positioning services, power distribution and communications. But a new dedicated satellite that will venture further away from our planet than others like it could greatly improve forecasts of hazardous solar outbursts. Lucie Green and Robert Wicks explain.

With the clock ticking down to Brexit, new research by David Bailey, Nigel Driffield and Erika Kispeter highlights the importance of avoiding a no-deal Brexit for the UK economy. Leaving the single market, they have found, puts almost 20% of current jobs at risk – including many of the UK’s relatively “good jobs” in its weaker regions. It’s doubtful that the £1.6 billion Stronger Towns Fund, just announced by the government, would go anywhere near compensating for this.
