Editor's note

Modelling for the proposed West Gate Tunnel predicts traffic chaos across Melbourne in 2031 and, unsurprisingly, indicates the project would ease this chaos. But such modelling is notoriously unreliable, our transport planning experts caution, and what’s more, the promise of car-oriented ‘solutions’ can blind us to better transport alternatives.

Also today, Rod Lamberts reviews Tom Nichols’ new book The Death of Expertise – a forensic examination of why the once-strong relationship between experts and the people is collapsing in democracies worldwide.
