We are delighted that the draft regulations on standardised tobacco packaging have finally been published for a six week consultation, taking us one step closer to achieving this life-saving legislation. This means we could see the implementation of standard packs in 2016 if the regulations pass both the consultation stage and a vote in Parliament which is expected before the next general election.
As the tobacco industry is continuing its attempt to disrupt the introduction of standardised packs, we are maintaining a high level of activity throughout the consultation period. We have written to MPs in the North West detailing why support is needed for this important measure and we are now calling on MPs to publicly back the campaign.
You may wish to respond to the consultation; you can submit your response by visiting the Department of Health website. TFF has drafted a response, please contact us
for further details. To find out more about standardised packaging please read our full briefing, our short guide or visit our standard packs page on the TFF website. You can also read our media statement welcoming the consultation here.

New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show clear evidence of standard packs working in Australia. Results show that total consumption of tobacco and cigarettes is currently the lowest ever recorded, dropping from $3.508bn in December 2012 (when standard packs were introduced) to 3.405 billion in March 2014. We used this as an opportunity to push for regulations to be released in our latest press release. Read the latest results and facts here.

Hi and welcome to your July eNews.
We are very happy that the Government has finally released the draft regulations for standard packs, which takes us another step closer to achieving legislation. We are busy working with MPs in the NW that want to show their support for standardised packaging, alongside local young people through a number of PR photo calls. We will include photos and quotes from MPs in the next edition.
Also, it isn't too late for young people in your area to sign up to our October youth events. Please forward the invite to any youth groups or schools that you would like to attend. If you haven't received the invite please email info@tobaccofreefutures.org
Following our regional successes, TFF and FRESH Smokefree North East have now been commissioned to share our knowledge in the East of England. We will be helping to develop options for what a tobacco control programme for the East of England and South Midlands could look like. It's great to share our knowledge and I look forward to updating you on the progress with the project.
Ian White, Project Manager: Communications and Marketing
