Adolescent and Young Adult Program Opens at Strong Recovery
Strong Recovery opened their new Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) program in October to provide comprehensive substance use disorder treatment services to youth. Referrals are now being accepted by calling the intake line at (585) 275-5400.

2nd Annual Music for the Mind Fundraiser to Be Held at Lovin' Cup
The 2nd Annual Music for the Mind Fundraiser will be held on November 14 at Lovin' Cup at Park Point. This event will feature music performances by Psychiatry faculty, staff, and mental health advocates. Money raised will go towards the department's music fund to enhance the lives of patients, families and staff. Tickets can be reserved for pickup here. READ MORE>>> 

Meliora Fund Recipients Selected
The Community Division Leadership Team announced the recipients of the inaugural Meliora Fund Program. This fund will support six proposed initiatives that are aimed at addressing priority needs within the Department of Psychiatry’s Community Division. READ MORE>>>

DPACC Celebrates 10th Anniversary
On October 16th, council members, department leaders, faculty, and staff celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Department of Psychiatry’s Advisory Council of Consumers (DPACC). The celebration included a year-in-review presentation to acknowledge the past year’s accomplishments, a delicious meal, “thank yous” from a wide range of department members, and gifts for DPACC members.

Marsha Wittink, MD, MBE, Kevin Brazill, DO, Telva Olivares, MD,and Hochang Ben Lee, MD presented a panel on job negotiations, career-transitioning and dual-boarding at the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry's 2019 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Kimberly van Orden Presents John D. Baum Memorial Lecture​

Kimberly van Orden, PhD gave the John D. Baum Memorial Lecture at The 33rd Annual Conference Spanning the Continuum of Care at Monroe Community Hospital. The conference explored current health concerns in older adults and included various geriatric health care professionals.She discussed strategies to promote social engagement in later life. Laura Inclema ​Promoted to Assistant Director of Nursing Practice

Laura Inclema, MS, RN-BC has been selected as the new Assistant Director of Nursing Practice for Ambulatory Psychiatry, Strong Recovery and AD-Care. She has been working in mental health care for over eighteen years, came to Strong in 2007 as an experienced RN, and quickly established herself as an expert patient centered clinician.

Supporting Alzheimer's Research and Care in Rochester

Members of our Psychiatry team joined the 2019 Rochester Walk to End Alzheimer's on October 12. Walkers included staff and faculty in our Older Adults Services and Memory Care Programs as well as our very own department chair, Hochang Benjamin Lee, MD. Donations are still being accepted to support The Alzheimer's Association. 

Promoting Recovery at the East House Hope and Recovery Luncheon​

Psychiatry team members came out to support East House for their 2019 East House Hope & Recovery Luncheon. This event brings together mental health advocates in the Rochester area, and proceeds from this event support East House's programs and services. READ MORE>>>

Rochester Medical Orchestra Seeking Musicians
The Eastman Community Music School is seeking musicians to join the Rochester Medical Orchestra. Formerly the Medical Center Orchestra, this group comprises of health professionals in the Rochester area to play music in the tradition of American civic orchestras. READ MORE>>>

  • Eric Caine, MD wrote an article for Democrat & Chronicle about the gun debate and what the data says about firearm deaths. 
  • Newsweek featured a study led by Benjamin Chapman, PhD, MPH exploring connections between adolescent personality and dementia.
  • Newsweek featured a study led by Anton Porsteinsson, MD on a potential new drug treatment for Alzheimer's Disease.
 
JoZ Powers Award

Staff Highlight

We're happy to share that JoZ Powers, community health worker in the Women’s Initiative Supporting Health (WISH) Program, was recently awarded the 2019 Community Health Worker of the Year Peer Empowerment Award from the Community Health Workers Association of Rochester. This annual award recognizes an individual that navigates systems, neighborhoods, and social groups to bridge and empower those who have been out of reach from traditional services. Diane Morse, MD describes JoZ as being "known and loved by women in the community. Wherever we go, women of all ages and backgrounds call out to her for comfort and inspiration."

  • Daniel Maeng, Ph.D., Ann Cornell, Psy.D., and George Nasra, M.D., M.B.A. were featured in the Journal of Environmental and Occupational Medicine for their study on the impact of employer-sponsored behavioral health programs on depression and anxiety in employees.
  • Ellen Poleshuck, PhD, Marsha Wittink, M.D., M.B.E., Iwona Juskiewicz, and Catherine Cerulli, J.D., Ph.D, published in The Journal of Women’s Health an evaluation of two interventions aimed at addressing unmet social needs in women’s health care delivery
  • The Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association featured Michael Hasselberg, M.S., Ph.D. for his discussion manuscript on the evolution of technology-enabled healthcare and Rochester’s digital behavioral healthcare model.
  • The American Psychological Association featured Mark Oldham, MD's study in General Hospital Psychiatry on how consultation-liaison psychiatry screening and integrated care delivery can help reduce patients’ average length of stay.
  • Psychiatric Services featured as an editor’s choice a study led by Wendi Cross, Ph.D. exploring trainer competence as a predictor of crisis counselors’ behaviors with callers. Co-authors included Karen Schmeelk-Cone, Ph.D. and Anthony Pisani, Ph.D.
