Torita at 98.9fm space

Logan's runner

With idols like Cathy Freeman and Sally Pearson it's no wonder Torita Isacc wants to follow in their footsteps.

She won't even let her disabilities - vision impairment and cerebral palsy - stop her from achieving her goals.

The young First Nation's athlete from Logan, south of Brisbane, got her chance at the London Paralympic Games competing in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.

Before her trip she popped by 98.9fm studios to explain how a YouTube clip got her hooked on  running.

"When I was in grade 7, I happen to run cross-country and I placed fourth," she began.

"My Mum always inspired me and she showed me a YouTube clip of Cathy Freeman running in Sydney."

From that point on, Torita says her interest grew and became even stronger as she followed the career of Australian hurdle champion, Sally Pearson.

Like her idols, Torita holds some state, national and Oceanic titles for her class and age group (cerebral palsy and Under 16) including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m.  She's the current record-holder for the 400m for her class.

"I did like cross-country when I started but I am now a sprinter."

What are you missing?

Toddler brushing teeth

How well do you think you brush your teeth?

There are some pearly whites even the most proficient of us miss.

Can you guess what they are?

Dr Richard Walk, from the Indigenous Dentists' Association Australia described them to Stayin' Strong.

“A lot of people miss the very back teeth, that’s the most common area," he said.

"On the outside of the upper-back teeth and also the lower front teeth. “

It might surprise you given the lower-front teeth are probably the easiest to reach.

Dr Walk says its important to clean these areas to avoid the build up of plaque and tartar.

”Our culture is passed down through story-telling, so to keep telling our stories and passing down knowledge, we need to take care of the main thing that helps us do that – our mouths! "

Simple teeth cleaning regime

  • BRUSH twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime;
  • HOLD toothbrush at a slight angle and BRUSH gently in short back-and-forth movement;
  • Brush the INSIDE and CHEWING SURFACE of your teeth;
  • Brush your TONGUE;
  • FLOSS your teeth to get to the spots your toothbrush may miss; and
  • SEE a dentist for a check-up and special cleaning twice a year.
