Profs Triumph at 2012 Chess Smackdown Opening

Inline Image

The Professors team took the Student team out behind Markin Hall and poked them in the eye (symbolically, of course) in round 1 of Chess Smackdown 2012, which began last week and continues each Monday until March 19. All games begin at 4 p.m. in Galilieo's Lounge in the SU Building.

According to sources from the Profs camp, gaining a decisive victory out of the gate was a gentle reminder to the students that, though they won last year, the  profs are not to be trifled with.

WEEK ONE SCORE:  Profs -- 4.5. Students -- 1.5.

After raising over $5,000 over the past two years with the Annual Everest Challenge, climbers at the U of L are back at it again.

This year they’re in for a tougher challenge than ever -- but they are staying warm, dry and well oxygenated, right here at home.

Beginning on Friday, March 30, 13 teams of climbers will collectively climb more than 8.8km to reach the equivalent height of Mount Everest using the indoor climbing wall at the University of Lethbridge Ascent Climbing Centre.

“We’re not making it easy for them,” said David Cassidy, U of L Climbing Club president. “This year they will still climb an average of 227 metres per person but there will be extra challenges, like a snow blindness challenge in which climbers will climb blindfolded.” Get more information about how to help a climber, or  to sign up for this activity, here.

www.thisismyU.ca -- Cavilla and Flying Doctors team making a real difference

Inline Image

He walked into the tiny, cleared out schoolhouse in a small seaside village on the southern coast of Haiti pleading for someone to help him. He was 61 years old, ostracised – mocked and feared by the children in his neighbourhood. No one would give him work.

Five years earlier he had developed a growth the size of a cantaloupe on the side of his head. No one could help him. On this day, in the schoolhouse, he met Dr. Ben Cavilla (BSc ’00), one of three founding members of the Flying Doctors of Canada (FDOC).

Cavilla was in Haiti doing humanitarian work with Heart to Heart International and Los Medicos Voladores (LMV) and checking out the suitability of Haiti for future FDOC projects.

“I spoke to the patient very frankly about the risks of bleeding and infection from cutting the side of his head open in these very primitive conditions, but he was adamant he wanted it done,” recalls Cavilla. What happened? Find out here.
