Editor's note

Following a debate in parliament, MPs have voted to allow Theresa May to hold an early election in June. They didn’t have much choice after she accused pretty much every party in Westminster of treating Brexit like a political football.

But who is really the opportunist here, asks Andy Price – the opposition leaders trying to hold the government to account or the prime minister who spies a chance to crush parliamentary dissent by increasing her party majority?

France is going to the polls this Sunday in the first of two rounds of voting to select a new president. Left-wing candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon is enjoying a surprise surge in the polls. Paul Smith profiles this last-minute upsetter.

It has been 35 years since the launch of the ZX Spectrum microcomputer. For Chris Sievey it was more than a basic computer – it was like a musical instrument. And it sparked his transformation into one of the best known pop parody stars – the papier-mâché-headed Frank Sidebottom.

There’s also grim news for gardeners today. Billions (yep, billions) of hybrid "super-slugs" are invading British gardens. They reproduce too fast for native slugs to compete. It may already be too late to stop the slime wave.
