Welcome to new subscribers...

Firstly, welcome to those of you who are receiving this newsletter for the first time.  I hope you find the information contained within interesting.

This newsletter is published every two months and contains information on different topics related to health and wellbeing.

This month, we explain Body Composition Analysis.  We also introduce Cathy Robbins, our new massage therapist and we have a reminder of the importance of maintaining a healthy immune system as winter approaches.

Body Composition Analysis...muscle

  • Great for weight loss
  • Great for achieving and maintaining fitness
  • Excellent for monitoring the benefits of your exercise routine

Body Composition Analysis (BCA) is a wonderful way of knowing exactly how your weight is made up i.e. how much is fat and how much is muscle.  We use a bio-impedance analysis machine and software to assess body fat and muscle mass with individual readings for each arm, leg and your torso.  This is a non-invasive, painless and very simple tool and it is fantastic for anyone wanting to lose weight or simply maintain a healthy weight.  It is also great for people who exercise regularly and want to monitor the effectiveness of their exercise routine.

In addition to measuring body fat and lean muscle, this BCA tool will also give you a guide as to the amount of fat you are carrying around your abdominal area (an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease) as well as an indication of your basal metabolic rate and your cellular or metabolic age (as opposed to your biological age).

You will get an easy to read report to help you track your progress and if you want, we can work with you to set goals and establish a diet and lifestyle programme to help you achieve  those goals.  By periodically retesting you can see exactly how you are progressing.

This is a wonderful tool to help motivate you and keep you on track.

To make an appointment for a BCA assessment or to find out more, please call Kaye on 9620 9503.

Introducing Cathy Robbins...massage

  • Relieve tension, reduce stress, improve health and wellbeing
  • Gift vouchers available (Mothers' Day, birthdays, thankyou gifts)

Cathy Robbins is a qualified Therapeutic Massage Therapist.  She has recently joined the LaVida Health team.

Cathy's expertise includes swedish/relaxation massage, deep tissue massage and pre- and post-natal massage.

Swedish massage is wonderful for the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.  It is beneficial for the treatment of stress (whether it be emotional or physical).  It can improve your sense of wellbeing and your ability to cope with life's daily demands.  It can also assist in improving your quality of sleep. It can help circulation, thereby assisting in the removal of metabolic waste and lactic acid and aiding muscle recovery after exercise.

Deep tissue massage is wonderful for relieving tension in the deep layers of muscle tissue.  It can help improve range of motion and address specific problems associated with chronic muscular pain and injuries.

Pre- and Post-Natal massage helps the body to cope with the changes occuring during and after pregnancy.  It helps muscular tension, lower back pain and can reduce the peripheral swelling often associated with pregnancy.  This relaxing form of massage is also soothing to the nervous system and may help to prevent insomnia.

Cathy is available by appointment Friday afternoons until 6pm...a wonderful way to end the week and ease into the weekend.  If Friday doesn't suit, another time may be possible by prior arrangement.  For an appointment, please call LaVida Health on 9620 9503 or call Cathy direct on 0422 776 342.  Appointments cost as little as $40 for 30 minutes and go up to $70 for one hour.

Gift vouchers are also available and make wonderful presents (don't forget Mothers' Day is coming up).

Fighting the winter bugs...'mmunity

Your immune system is your main defence against the onslaught of infections which seem to plague us over the winter months. The severity and duration of the sore throat, runny nose, fever, sneezing, coughs and aches depend on the strength of your immune system.

Your immunity is negatively influenced by:

  • physical and emotional stress
  • lack of exercise
  • poor food choices and nutritional deficiencies
  • lack of sleep and relaxation

Looking after your immune system can help prevent infection or, at least, minimise the severity. To boost and maintain the health of your immune system, we recommend the following:

  • eat a well balanced diet of fresh, wholesome, unprocessed foods i.e. lots of fruit and vegetables
  • ensure you are getting sufficient protein and drink plenty of water
  • get some regular exercise (but don't overdo it)
  • make sure you plan some rest and relaxation to help reduce your stress levels.

If these things are a challenge, nutritional and herbal supplements can help (especially if you do succumb to an infection).

If infection does strike, it is worth remembering that most of these bugs are viral in nature and therefore antibiotics won't help.  Antibiotics will only help with bacterial infections.  However, there are a number of herbs which are renowned for their beneficial effects in treating colds and flu.  These include Andrographis paniculata, Adhatoda vasica, Baptisia tinctora, Sambucus nigra, Echinacea spp, Euphrasia officinalis and  many others. They have various attributes including boosting the immune system, reducing fever, reducing catarrh and relieving a cough.  Following a consultation, your naturopath will develop a formula specific for your needs based on your unique collection of symptoms.  This may be in liquid  or tablet form.  A herbal gargle or throat spray may also be beneficial for that raging sore throat.

Nutritionally, extra zinc and vitamin C may also be of benefit as they are vital to a healthy immune system.

So if you are concerned about falling ill this winter, there are many things you can do to boost your immune system.  And remember, prevention is the best way to go.  Call Kaye on 9620 9503 to make an appointment to help get you through the winter months fighting fit or to hit that bug on the head.
