Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton community update - 3 December 2020

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
It's the count down to summer holidays and there's lots of events and activities coming up around town, including the Te Hāpua Summer Pool party. As we head into the warmer months, the Council has launched their "Water like you oughta” campaign, which encourages people to think carefully about how and when they water their gardens.
If you're up for a challenge, check out Council's new Bin Good Game and test your knowledge of what items belong in your red, yellow and green wheelie bins. It's a fun way to tackle a serious issue and help minimise the amount of waste going to landfill. Remember to take a look at the new Long Term Plan portal and the challenges and opportunities we’re facing as we develop our 10-year budget.
Stay together, look after one another.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, Mike Mora

Beware algal blooms in Christchurch ponds and wetlands

People and their pets are being urged to avoid stormwater ponds and wetlands in Christchurch as they could contain the potentially toxic algae, cyanobacteria.

The algae typically presents as dark brown or black mats in the water. Pets that show signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats should be taken to a vet immediately.

Our stormwater basins provide new wetland habitats for our native flora and fauna to flourish, including endangered and protected bird species.  You can walk your dog around the basins, but please be mindful these wetlands are home to native animals and ensure your dog doesn’t chase the wildlife.
