WHAT'S NEW IN NEW SOUTH WALESWhat's new in food and wineHunter Valley chef and restaurateur Frank Fawkner (pictured) has opened Fawk Foods Kitchen & Bakery Pokolbin, offering locals and tourists tasty café-style eats and baked treats. With a focus on locally-sourced ingredients from the Hunter, the menu boasts artisan breads, bacon and egg rolls and blackberry chocolate muffins. Boost your knowledge of Australian wines at Nomad restaurant’s wine masterclasses. The intimate evenings held in the minimalist gallery above the Surry Hills restaurant are hosted by Nomad’s knowledgeable Director of Wine, Simon Howland, and offer wine teachings for the curious. Yulli’s Brews, who began by crafting vegan beers for Surry Hills vegetarian restaurant Yulli’s, have launched a dedicated brewery space in Alexandria. The warehouse space, which has a cool crimson glow from a light installation, has a mezzanine eating area and bar on the ground floor. Sample 12 beers on tap, Yulli’s new green apple cider, local wines and fusion food of Vietnamese, Greek and Korean origins, reflecting the cultural backgrounds of the Yulli team. Bringing a touch of Paris to Kiama is new bakehouse Parfait Patisserie. The line up to buy their delicate sweet treats is often snaking down the street. Local favourites are the smooth Love The Rush coffee blend and their classic flaky croissants. What's new in places to stayFrom late August to November, the Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley resort in the Blue Mountains will host a series of escapes focused around wellness, mindfulness and beauty. Guests can have one-on-one time with some of Australia’s leading wellness warriors, including Sodashi founder Megan Larson, yogi Kate Kendall of Flow Athletic, and holistic facialist, Jocelyn Petroni. With views out to beautiful Bongong High Plains and snow-capped Victorian Alps, Albury’s new Mantra Hotel has opened its doors. The $40 million dollar resort offers one- and two-bedroom studios and suites and has expansive conferencing and events facilities and an exclusive Sky Lounge with sky lighting and its own wet bar. The Snowy Mountains has six new eco-guest cabins nestled in Thredbo Valley in Crackenback. The Field Huts, an addition to Penderlea’s Alpine Accommodation, are the owner Sonja’s stylish interpretation of a cattleman’s hut with stone and steel features, antique timbers and a private bathtub overlooking rugged landscape. Perfect for groups, you can book a variety of configurations including two huts combined into a Field House to sleep four. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has refurbished Numbananga Lodge at Smiggin Holes. Dating back to the 1960s, the self-contained lodge has been transformed by a heritage architect into contemporary accommodation sleeping up to six people. There are three bedrooms, a modern drying room, laundry and kitchen and double-glazed, thermally-efficient windows. What's new in things to see and doFor couples who like living on the edge, Outdoor Raw Cliffnics is a unique experience offering a picnic whilst suspended over the Shoalhaven clifftops, with a view of rivers, mountains and beaches. The unforgettable outdoor dining adventure includes locally-produced wine and beer and a delicious picnic basket brimming with fresh food. Learn chef secrets and hone your kitchen skills at the Hampden Deli, Dining and School—the brainchild of culinary stars, chef Nick Gardner, formerly of Sydney’s Quay and Tetsuya’s, and experienced restaurant manager Stevie-Lee Bounader. You will craft handmade canapes, learn chef preparation techniques and how to match produce with wine. Sydney’s ‘secret’ national park, Dharawal National Park in the Macarthur region, will celebrate National Science Week (11-19 August) with a guided tour led by a geomorphologist, focussed on the Science of Managing Dharawal National Park. Held on 18 August from 2pm to 3.30pm, the tour will take visitors to Minerva Pool, a pristine waterhole with a small stone island and the perfect spot to enjoy a view and watch the waterfall cascading into the rockpool below. The Fire Forge Froth tour is a unique artisan experience in the Southern Highlands, by Wild Food Adventures. The day includes a forge lesson with a blacksmith where you make your own ‘S’ hook to take home. You’ll then enjoy beer sampling at the Southern Highlands Brewing Taphouse and a delicious lunch of local produce. Wild Food Adventures offers door-to-door collection from Sydney in a luxury vehicle. Altina Wildlife Park in the Riverina Region has welcomed three exotic guests—sleek wild cats from South Africa. The three African Servals—Levi, Keeno and female Layla—have arrived to join serval Hasani, who came to the Riverina’s Altina Zoo last year. The servals are quiet and love cuddles—encounters available for a limited time, call now. It will feature 15 films over two weekends, including comedy, drama, documentaries and shorts. 18 August – The Bledisloe Cup returns to Sydney in 2018 with the Qantas Wallabies playing the All Blacks. This multicultural festival will also feature live performances, stalls, children’s rides, henna tattoos and lots of giveaways. 17-26 August – The Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival, held at the Auburn Botanic Gardens, is a celebration of Japanese modern and traditional culture through flora, food, movies, music and performance. 24-25 August – The Australian Indoor Skydiving Championships are the largest indoor skydiving competition in the Southern Hemisphere, and the qualifier for Australians to participate in the World Cup. The public can attend free of charge or watch live via a Facebook feed. 24-26 August – Oxfam Trailwalker is no walk in the park; it's one of the toughest team challenges in the world. Teams of four tackle 100 kilometres of bush trail in northern Sydney within 48 hours, as well as fundraise for Oxfam's work. 25 August – Tinnie Fest is back for the fifth year running at the Norfolk Hotel. Sample beer from more than 20 breweries, try tinnie bobbing, and enjoy DJs in the garden plus a special Wings and Tins menu. 26 August – Everything that’s good about eating and drinking in Italy comes together under one roof at Australian Technology Park for the Italian Wine + Food Festival with food, drink, entertainment and information for everyone. 26 August – The annual Sydney Jewish Writers Festival is a unique, meaningful opportunity for people to engage with the wealth and diversity of contemporary Jewish writing and to celebrate their rich cultural heritage. 29 August – 15 December – The smash hit Jersey Boys is back in Sydney for a second season at the Capitol Theatre, telling the true-life story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons through all of their best songs. REGIONAL 10-12 August – The Bangalow Music Festival offers a sublime program of chamber music from highest calibre chamber and orchestral musicians from around the world. 11 August – Racers, get ready. The annual Top to Bottom race presented by Mumm Champagne is back at Thredbo for 2018 with some new categories, bigger parties and more fun to be had. 11-12 August – The Aroma Festival in Maitland aims to ward off the Winter chill with the best local coffee roasters, a delectable range of chocolates, wine, fresh produce, entertainment and much more. 12 August – The Central Coast will come alive for the Country Music Festival, showcasing a massive line-up of quality Australian performers like Adam Eckersley, Homegrown, Peter Denahy, Gretta Ziller and Andrew Swift. 12 August – The Kiama Artisan Food Festival will showcase local small-scale producers and local produce through workshops, stalls and classes, as well as kids’ rides and entertainment. 16-19 August – Held every year in Katoomba, the Blue Mountains Elvis Festival features some of the finest Elvis tribute artists in Australia, along with a range of attractions and activities, indoors and out. 17-19 August – Held in the foothills of Wollumbin Mount Warning, the O’Heart Festival is a three-day Conscious Living-Indie Folk event deeply rooted in environmental awareness, wellness and quality live music. 19 August – The Mudgee Running Festival is perfect for the first timer who is looking for a no-pressure race, yet still a course that is challenging to the experienced marathoner. Events include a Marathon, Half Marathon, and five- and 10-kilometre Fun Runs. 23-26 August – The Central Coast Ukulele Festival has a program jam packed with ukulele clubs from across the state as well as professional ukulele acts. Join the party at the beautiful seaside location in The Entrance. 24 August – 2 September – The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mount Tomah will be transformed by a sea of golden hues as plantings of daffodils erupt in bloom. Pack a picnic, take a guided walk or join in a bulb growing workshop. 25-26 August – The annual Wentworth Show offers a great family day out for visitors and locals alike, highlighting country living with fresh produce, horses, sheep dogs, shearing competitions, whip cracking and an animal nursery. 25-26 August – The Woolgoolga MTB Festival is a two-day mountain bike extravaganza with events for riders of all ages, fitness and ability. 26 August – Experience the jovial atmosphere of Griffith’s Festa delle Salsicce (Festival of the Sausage) where you can eat, drink, chat and enjoy traditional folk music over a long lunch to celebrate the end of the salami-making season. 27-29 August – One of the largest agricultural shows west of the Blue Mountains, the Parkes Show, features animal exhibits, horse events, entertainment, side shows, trade stands, fireworks, shearing competitions and the popular Smash Up Derby. |
