Editor's note

The NSW government has given police new powers to clear the Martin Place homeless camp in Sydney’s CBD. Cristy Clark writes that this compounds the violation of the human right to housing and, by sweeping it under the carpet, silences a political protest about a systemic injustice that should make us uncomfortable.

Also today Robert Phiddian and Haydon Manning chronicle the truly great era of political cartooning dominated by the likes of Tandberg, Leunig, Mitchell, Coopes, Alston, Leak, Petty, Cooke, Spooner, Brown, Nicholson, Wilcox, Rowe, Knight, Tanner, Pryor, Moir, Leahy and Atchison. Their ranks are thinning now but their humane and “savage shorthand to the major issues of day” lives in memory, unlikely ever to be replaced.

Clearing homeless camps compounds the violation of human rights and entrenches the problem

Cristy Clark, Southern Cross University

The Martin Place camp and others like it should make us uncomfortable. We live in a system that creates and tolerates homelessness.

  • Friday essay: political cartooning – the end of an era

Robert Phiddian, Flinders University; Haydon Manning, Flinders University

One of the great satirical achievements of the mass media era, the editorial cartoon, is losing its centrality in the digital age. Yet the 'visual terrorism' of cartoons can cut through the verbiage of political commentary.
