The two-day, four-ceremony event draws several thousand guests who come from all over the world to see their family members graduate. They come from widely different disciplinary backgrounds including linguistics, psychology, neuroscience and education, and have recently formed an interdisciplinary research group to explore how  their work can benefit from insights developed in each other’s specializations.

Depending on their field, they tend to see language as mainly a social act, a cognitive act, or a motor act. The research group brings these three views together so they can see all relevant perspectives at the same time.

For additional information about the Language Development, Identity and Assessment group, please contact Dr. Nicole Rosen, or Dr. Inge Genee.

Women limited in their control of natural childbirth plans by medical intervention: U of L study

What expectant mothers envision for their birth experiences often isn’t what they realize, according to a University of Lethbridge study.

The result is a drastic rise in Caesarean section rates that has alternative health-care providers, feminist advocates for women’s health and mainstream medical providers all expressing serious concerns about the medicalization of childbirth.

In a paper titled “Best Laid Plans? Women’s Choices, Expectations and Experiences in Childbirth,” University of Lethbridge sociology researcher Dr. Claudia Malacrida and co-author, doctoral candidate Tiffany Boulton of the University of Leeds, UK, found that, contrary to the belief that modern birthing experiences are consumer driven because women have the capacity to plan for, make decisions about and choose a particular type of birth experience, a woman’s capacity to ‘drive the machine’ of birth is severely limited.

Where in the world is fairy candalabra?

The U of L Herbarium has long been a valuable reference tool for studying plant biodiversity in southern Alberta. Recent collaboration with the U of L Library has made the complete collection (20,000+ specimens) available to anyone with on-line access.

A new project aimed at involving interested individuals in documenting local floras including the campus flora, the city flora and the flora  at Waterton Lakes National Park has started and the Herbarium team needs your help.

All you need is a smartphone, a keen eye and an interest in being outside.

Here is your first assignment: Find the plant  -- Fairy candalabra (aka Androsace septentrionalis) -- pictured above, and report back to Dr. John Bain (Biological Sciences).

There will be other assignments over the summer. Photos may be used in an upcoming e-book on  coulee flora, so please make sure they are clear and properly exposed.
