Artist in Residence Lecture: Erin Cosgrove (May 1)

Erin Cosgrove, UNLV's Artist in Residence, will be giving a lecture on May 1 at 7 pm inside of the Barrick Auditorium.  Erin is an artist and writer who uses video, animation, books, painting, scrolls, timelines, installation, and performance in her artwork. She was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and has lived in Los Angeles since 1998. She received her BFA from The University of Minnesota in 1996 and an MFA from ULCA in 2001.

Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe including one-person shows at The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Carl Berg Gallery, Los Angeles; Printed Matter, New York; and Espace Croise Centre d'art Contemporain, Roubaix, France. Her art is represented in the collections of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Her work has been included in shows at The Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; Galleri S.E International Contemporary Art, Bergen, Norway; Catharine Clark Gallery, San Francisco; Rogue Wave at LA Louver, Los Angeles; The Armory Show, New York; The Santa Barbara Museum of Art; Kunst-Werke, Berlin, Germany; The Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz, Austria; and Arco, Madrid.

Barrick Films Presents Jessie Stead (starting May 2)

During the month of May the Barrick Film Series presents New York based Filmmaker Jessie Stead. Stead’s single channel motion picture How To Quit Smoking At The Moon Hotel (2013).

Starring Director Jessie Stead as "a moonlighter" this neo-nocturne details a few small transactions staged in a coin operated elevator at a downloaded lunar hotel.

Jessie Stead produces and distributes work in overlapping and re-mixable patterns of cinema, installation, music and other forms of cross-disciplined art. Posing as a film director in an on-going real life performance piece, Stead's single channel motion-pictures have been featured internationally. Recent presentations include the Greater New York Cinema exhibition at MoMA PS1, Anthology Film Archives, the London Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Exhibitions and events orchestrated by Stead and key collaborators including her art-band HARIBO have recently been presented at mixed venues including Peforma 11, Akershus Kunstsenter, Soloway Gallery, nightclubs and many other places.

The UNLV Bachelor of Fine Arts Candidates of 2013 are proud to present recent works developed through- out our final year of attendence. Each Candidate has recieved funds from the Devos Scholarship for our final year at UNLV. The candidates will be exhibiting variations of work using many different materials and various subject matter; this includes video, performance, installation art, painting, sculpture, multi-media works, and photography.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts Candidates will give and Artisit Talk in the Barrick Museum on Friday, May 3 from 5-6:30 pm. The Opening Reception immediately follows the Artist Talk in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery on Friday May 3 from 7-9 pm. 2013 BFA Exhibition will be on display from Friday May 3 - June 1st at Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. Part Two will be on display in Grant Hall Gallery from May 3 - May 11, located at 4505 Maryland Parkway on University of Las Vegas‘ campus.

Go Home! First Friday, May 3 starting at 8 pm at Boulder Plaza (1st Street and Boulder Ave in the Arts District). The UNLV Art in Public Places Class presents a special video/performance piece - themed around the dinner table - with repeat performances on the half hour through 10 pm. In conjunction with Home, the Topography of Place, the May exhibition at RTZvegas.

Pre-Columbian Sacrifice: The Burden of the Elite (May 9)

Pre-Columbian Sacrifice: The Burden of the Elite will open at the UNLV Barrick Museum on May 9. The exhibition is being curated by students enrolled in Gallery Practices (ART 309).  The student-produced exhibition explores the central themes of ritual sacrifice, feasting, blood letting, and the ancient ballgame using artifacts from the Dr. Michael C. and Mannetta Braunstein Collection of Pre-Columbian Art. The opening reception will be held May 9 from 6-8 pm.

UNLV senior undergraduate students Mark Combs, Holly Vaughn and Amanda Haymond have organized a new exhibit, opening May 15, at the university's Grant Hall Gallery. Combs, Vaughn and Haymond are studio art majors with emphasis in sculpture. The art show will showcase their new sculptural work completed this semester in advanced sculpture. The closing reception will be held in the Grant Hall Gallery on the UNLV campus from 6-9 pm on Friday, May 17.
