Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora everyone,
We've got some wonderful community events coming up over the next few weeks, from community art exhibitions to a showcase of an important plan to restore the ecological health of Lyttelton Harbour. It's also great to see work progressing on a project to end the routine discharge of treated wastewater into Lyttelton Harbour, while community consultation has now opened on options to better manage the disposal of Akaroa's wastewater.  Council voted on the Draft Annual Plan today, which will provide more certainty to our community. Keep being kind and look after one another. Kia kaha.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, Tori Peden

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Monday 20 July. Some highlights of our meeting included receiving a report from the Akaroa Treated Wastewater Resuse Options Working Party and learning more about the four options for disposing highly treated wastewater, including irrigating new areas of native trees. The Board also adopted the Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū/Banks Peninsula Community Board Plan 2020-2022, which outlines our vision for the local community and identifies some priority projects we’d like to achieve over the next three years. You can view the plan on our webpage, read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

Simeon Quay

An update on the Lyttelton Harbour wastewater project

Over in Lyttelton, the Simeon Quay pump station is looking great, with decorative cabbage tree art work now sandblasted onto the exterior of the building. We've waterproofed the roof and installed of the ceiling, fitted the external doors and finished the electrical work.
Over the next couple of weeks we'll do night works to connect sewer pipelines to the pump station. Parts of this work will be noisy, but we'll work as quickly as possible to minimise disruption. Once complete, this pump station will be the powerhouse to pump all of Lyttelton Harbour's wastewater to the main treatment plant in Bromley.

Healthy Harbour showcase this Sunday

Come along to the Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour Showcase on Sunday 26 July at Living Springs. There will be informative guided walks, activities for kids, inspiring presentations including one on the volcanology, springs and waterways of Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour, "Ask an Expert" stalls, Predator Free Port Hills traps for sale and hopefully a plant sale selling plants at cost - plus more.
Guided walks rotating from 1pm-1:45pm, talks from 2pm-3pm, followed by afternoon tea and "Ask an Expert" stalls from 3pm to 4pm.
Whaka-Ora is the plan to restore the ecological and cultural health of the harbour. Come to hear about what projects are currently underway, give us your ideas, and find out how you can be involved. RSVPs appreciated but not essential (so you all get a lovely afternoon tea) to info@healthyharbour.org.nz.

Orion sets up backup power

Orion is setting up provision so that in the event of a major emergency, generators can be brought over the hill and plugged in to its network in Akaroa, to power the town.  The work will also enable them to run generators to keep the power on while they are doing work to maintain and upgrade Bank Peninsulas network.  This work will result in power outages on 30 and 31 July.  See the Orion website for a list of affected areas and times.
