Sellafield Ltd and NMP employees donate £80,000 of gifts to children live on air

As an extension of Sellafield Ltd’s support for ‘Cash for Kids’,  their charity of the year, the company has been backing the ‘Mission Christmas’ appeal by encouraging its 10,000 employees to buy an extra gift locally, for children who wouldn’t  otherwise wake up to any presents at all on Christmas morning.

Over the past four weeks employees have been directed to local shops specialising in gifts and toys and asked to bring an extra Christmas gift to work – meaning West Cumbrian businesses have also benefited from the appeal.

Cost saving solution

Innovative idea thinking recently ‘showered’ the First Generation Magnox Storage Pond (FGMSP) with cost savings at Sellafield Ltd.

The FGMSP at Sellafield is one of the site’s four Legacy Pond and Silo facilities and was constructed during the 1950s and 1960s as part of the UK’s expanding nuclear programme. Incident Reports

Sellafield Incident Report
Temporary disruption to power supply

On Wednesday 27 November there was a temporary power loss on the East side of the Sellafield Site.

The fault was traced to a substation that feeds the Waste Vitrification Plant Line three (WVP L3). Electrical supplies were safely restored to affected buildings by midday.

Following the power loss there was evidence of contamination within three areas of Vitrification Plant Line three (VIT Line 3). Lines one and two were unaffected by contamination.

WVP Plant systems were quickly returned to normal, including ventilation, except for one section of the ventilation system in Line three.

There was no abnormal contamination detected external to the building and there was little impact to other buildings on site.

A team has been brought together to begin the task of bringing VIT Line three back into operation. The timescales for this are still to be determined.

In the meantime, a board of inquiry has been set up to investigate the cause of the fault.

The plant is completing an assessment in order to determine the classification level of this event under the Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRRs).

All areas of the Vitrification plant are accessible; however, staff required to work in the affected areas of Line three will need to use additional Personal Protective Equipment until clean up is complete.
