Members of the House of Representatives are expected to vote later today to impeach President Donald Trump. The articles of impeachment accuse the president of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress over his attempts to get the Ukraine president to investigate a political rival.
The impeachment battle is the latest manifestation of a centuries-old power struggle between Congress and the president, scholars say. In four stories that The Conversation has published this year, political scientists and historians write that since George Washington’s presidency, Congress has fought to exercise accountability over the executive branch. Sometimes lawmakers have been successful, often they have not. But Trump has taken
that struggle to a new level.
