We're going to pause our work over the holiday period, from Saturday 21 December until Sunday 5 January. Thank you for all your patience so far as we work towards creating a healthier harbour for current and future generations to enjoy. Tunnel drilling under Heathcote River early in new yearA tunnel is set to be drilled under the Heathcote River in January as part of the Lyttelton Harbour wastewater project. A 535-metre pipeline will be pulled through the tunnel under the river and the Ferry Road roundabout by a method called directional drilling. Read more on Newsline. Revised timeframe for Simeon QuayWe've revised the design of the Simeon Quay pump station and added features to ensure it performs safely and at its best. This means we now expect to finish building the Simeon Quay pump station by October 2020 and not early 2020 as previously planned. Once complete, the Simeon Quay pump station will be the powerhouse to pump all of Lyttelton Harbour’s wastewater through the Heathcote Valley pipeline to the main Christchurch system. What have we done so far at Simeon Quay?We have completed the wet well and excavated for foundations. The pipe work underneath the Simeon Quay pump station has been installed and we have completed one of three pipes underneath the road. Here's one of our contractors, Rodrigo, doing set out work for the steel reinforcing for the pump station foundation. Port Hills Road reseal planned for summerWe are currently installing sections of the 4.5 km Heathcote Valley pipeline along Port Hills Road and are on track to reseal the carriageway during the summer months, once we’ve laid the pipeline and allowed the road time to settle. Summer is traditionally our roading and sealing season, as the long, dry summer days are better for building roads. Our team are also looking at replacing a 600m section of the local water main along Port Hill Road, between the roundabout and Mauger Drive, in conjunction with the wastewater works. This is due to a number of recent water main failures where the pipe has burst and leaked water. By bringing the water main replacement works forward to align with the wastewater installation and resealing programme, we can put a stop to any future water leaks and protect the new road surface. We expect the water main replacement work to take around six weeks to complete and intend for this work to be carried out by our lead contractor. Bridle Path Road and Gondola worksFrom Monday 6 January we'll be installing part of the wastewater pipeline from the corner of Bridle Path Road through the car park and parallel to the Bridle Path walk. Access to the Gondola car park and Bridle Path walk will be open at all times and there will be traffic management in place so you'll know where to go.
