This Friday: the day you've all been waiting for! This Friday, Nov. 25, Mayor Mick Cornett and Santa Claus will meet in Bricktown to light the SandRidge Christmas Tree for the first time this holiday season. The SandRidge Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony serves as the perfect kickoff for Downtown in December, presented by Devon. The 32 foot-tall tree is located on the Bricktown Canal on Mickey Mantle Drive and stands as the centerpiece for the month-long celebration. Free activities include: live music by the Groove Merchants, professional pictures with Santa, make-your-own-ornament craft, face painting, cookies from Nonna's, and hot cocoa from CocoFlow. Devon invites Santa to the Myriad Gardens Devon Energy has invited Santa to bring his sleigh to the new Myriad Gardens pavilion starting this Saturday especially for Downtown in December. Saturdays with Santa is a new addition to the Downtown in December lineup and is sure to become a family favorite. After visiting with Santa, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy. Kids of all ages may write letters to Santa, take pictures in Santa's sleigh, visit the arts and crafts table, and play in the Myriad Gardens' new children's park. Throughout the season, there will also be special appearances by the Oklahoma City Ballet, Phil the Penguin from the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Mrs. Claus, Oklahoma City Barons mascot, Derrick, Thunder’s Rumble the bison, and children’s entertainer, Spaghetti Eddie. “Downtown Oklahoma City has been our home for more than 40 years,” said Wendi Schuur, Devon’s director of public and community affairs. “Many Oklahomans have incorporated these events into their family’s holiday tradition, and we are delighted to work with Downtown OKC Inc. to provide even more opportunities for families to come downtown and experience a festive atmosphere and abundant activities.” Devon’s Saturdays with Santa is offered free of charge to the public and will take place on Nov. 26, Dec. 3, Dec. 10, and Dec. 17 from noon – 3 p.m in the Myriad Gardens pavilion on the corner of Reno and Hudson. This event is part Downtown in December – Oklahoma City’s premier winter celebration. Downtown in December, presented by Devon, will run from Nov. 25, 2011 through Jan. 1, 2012. Oklahoma City Community Foundation offers free admission to downtown museums Downtown In December, presented by Devon, invites holiday visitors and families to enjoy four Sundays of culture, art, history and music during Oklahoma City Community Foundation’s Free Museum Sundays. Beginning Nov. 27, at least one of four participating Downtown museums will be open for free from 1 – 6 p.m. each Sunday. Participating museums include the American Banjo Museum, Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum.
Visit the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and immerse yourself in a world of art. Located in downtown Oklahoma City's Arts District, the Museum of Art presents outstanding special and permanent collection exhibitions and is home to the most comprehensive collection of Chihuly glass in the world. The museum offers visitors the finest international, independent and classic films in the Noble Theater, innovative educational programs in the Museum School, quality merchandise in the Museum Store and fine dining in the Museum Cafe. For more information visit okcmoa.com. The American Banjo Museum showcases more than 300 instruments, the largest collection on public display in the world. Examples include replicas of primitive banjos developed by African slaves in the Old South, Minstrel Age instruments from 19th century, post WWII instruments used in bluegrass, folk and world music, and the museum's core collection of ornately decorated banjos made in America during the Jazz Age of the 1920's and 30s. Through the high-tech, interactive exhibits at the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum, visitors can experience Oklahoma’s story through its people. Video-driven displays and touch screens showcase the accomplishments and impact of Oklahomans like country music superstar Reba McEntire, aviation innovator Wiley Post and BMX superstar Mat Hoffman. The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum was created to honor those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever by the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The Memorial and Museum are dedicated to educating visitors about the impact of violence, informing about events surrounding the bombing and inspiring hope and healing through lessons learned by those affected. Visitors flock to OneMain Financial's Bricktown canal lightingOn Nov. 19, hundreds of visitors flocked to the Bricktown Canal for OneMain Financial's Bricktown Canal Lighting. Participants of all ages enjoyed music by the OKC Philharmonic Brass Quintet, free cocoa, popcorn and Bricktown Canal Water Taxi rides. Sonic's Segway Santa and the OKC Philharmonic's Phil the Penguin were there to entertain spread holiday cheer. “We are thrilled to be involved in this year’s Downtown in December events," said Oklahoma-native and OneMain Financial area director Dolan Pederson. Showcase your art in the 2012 Red Earth FestivalArtist applications for the 26th annual Red Earth Festival art market are currently being accepted for the event scheduled June 8-10, at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City. The award-winning festival is considered the world’s largest event of its kind, drawing thousands of art enthusiasts to a three-day weekend which celebrates Native American visual art and dance. The Red Earth juried art market annually showcases more than 200 artists representing Native tribes and nations from throughout the United States and Canada. It drew nearly 30,000 attendees in 2011 and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Redbud Award for “Outstanding Event” from the Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department and recognition as a Top 100 Event in North America by the American Bus Association. Red Earth Festival art market categories include contemporary and traditional artforms such as cultural items; jewelry; paintings, drawings, graphics and photography; sculpture; pottery; and clothing, textiles and weaving. Each category is divided into subdivisions. Applicants must be able to provide documents of proof of membership in a federally or state-recognized tribal entity or documents of proof of certification as Indian Artisans by an Indian tribe. Juried applicants must provide three color images per category of artwork that will be sold in their booth. Applications can be downloaded from redearth.org or obtained by calling (405) 427-5228. Booth space in the Red Earth art market is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
