 Welcome to the month of May! It's going to be a busy month, with percussionists, professors, romance, a duck musical, opera in the Wairarapa and much more. 

We've slipped a June event in here too, just because we think it's pretty special—Karrin Allyson is a five-time Grammy nominated vocalist, and is performing with our very own NZSM Big Band and the Tom Warrington Trio in the Wellington Jazz Festival. Karrin Allyson with the Tom Warrington Trio and NZSM Big Band

Presented by NZSM as part of the Wellington Jazz Festival. 

Known for her impressive musical range, Karrin glides between bittersweet and sassy, covering the greats from Duke Ellington to Dizzy Gillespie with ease. With the experienced trio of bassist Tom Warrington (Buddy Rich Band), drummer Joe La Barbera (Bill Evans Trio) and guitarist Larry Koonse (Seth McFarlane’s big band) performing with her, you’re in for a treat.

 

Masterclass with the Enso String Quartet

We are delighted to be hosting this special masterclass with leading American ensemble Ensō String Quartet, presented by Chamber Music New Zealand. Two members of Ensō will work with selected NZSM student ensembles - we invite you to come along and hear them talk about chamber music.

 

Garrett Mendelow

Cost: Free

Garrett Mendelow is an up and coming percussionist from the United States, specialising in contemporary percussion performance practices and new music. He will present a concert of works by Wellington composers.

He also presents a free percussion workshop at 10am on Thursday 26 May in the ACR.

 

Honk! Jr

Honk! Jr is a heartwarming musical by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe which delights audiences of all ages with its memorable score and sparkling wit. Our production is performed by members of our youth outreach programme, PULSE, and is directed by Jane Yonge. Dr Robert Legg is the musical director and Mark Dorrell provides the piano accompaniment.

 

Professor Laurence Sherr presents Music Forum

When: 3:10pm, Friday 6 May

Laurence Sherr is Professor of Music at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, and is an active composer of Holocaust remembrance music and lecturer on Holocaust music topics. At NZSM he presents a seminar at Music Forum titled Music at Auschwitz: Aid to Survival or Dehumanising Degradation?

 

Music for Health and Wellbeing / Hauora week

When: 21 - 28 May 
Where: Various venues, Victoria University
Cost: Free

NZSM highlights the link between music and wellbeing with a week of pop-up events. Check our website and social media for updates. 

As an introduction and prelude to the week,  we welcome colleagues and students to attend an open session of Master of Music Therapy student research proposal presentations and completed research at 9am on Thursday 19th May in Studio 310, Student Union Building.

 

Opera fundraiser in Martinborough

Where: Cabbage Tree Vineyard
Cost: $45 including wine and light refreshments

The Cabbage Tree Vineyard in Martinborough hosts a musical and operatic fundraiser for Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music's future opera productions.

South Wairarapa’s own “effervescent” soprano Georgia Jamieson Emms will be joined by Mozart ensembles from 3rd year students and arias from those in their 4th year. Head of Classical Voice, Margaret Medlyn, will also sing, with Jenny Wollerman and Richard Greager.

NZSM plays the Bristol

NZSM Bristol gigs are always a great night of entertainment. The first event for 2016 kicks off with NZSM Big Band Two, followed by the Jazz Guitar Ensemble, Latin Ensemble and finishes with NZSM Big Band One with our own Rodger Fox.

 

Vladimir Gorbach

Internationally acclaimed guitarist Vladimir Gorbach will present a solo guitar concert at NZSM with works by Scarlatti, Piazzolla, Bach, and various Spanish composers.

He also presents a free public masterclass on Saturday 28 May at 10am, ACR. 

 

NZSM Concerto Competition

The NZSM Concerto Competition is one of the highly anticipated events on the Classical Performance annual calendar. This year the event is run in association with the Wellington Youth Orchestra, and the competition is open to players from NZSM as well as WYO.

 

Masterclass with Simon O'Neill

A native of New Zealand, Simon O’Neill has established himself as one of the finest helden-tenors on the international stage.

He presents a public masterclass with NZSM students - all welcome. 

 

The Third Eye Classical Sessions

A new way to enjoy classical music - with a pint in hand! The Third Eye - Tuatara's Temple of Taste Classical Sessions are back next week, and the performers this time are all NZSM students. Presented by the good folk at Chamber Music New Zealand.

Composers Workshop and Music Forum

The NZSM Composition Programme presents Composers Workshop from 3:10–4:30pm each Wednesday during term time, in the Adam Concert Room - open to all. Check out the schedule here.
