Greetings from your Community Board
Kia ora koutou,
With Christmas just around the corner, it's the perfect time to reflect on the year, with its many challenges and opportunities for our community.
We've held our last Board meeting of the year and will be reconvening in the New Year to continue the positive momentum in our community.
On behalf of the Board, we wish you all happy and safe holidays.
Stay together, look after one another.
Board Chair, Emma Norrish
Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Friday 18 December. Some highlights of our meeting included
We approved the location and construction of a temporary wayfinding sign at Shirley Community Reserve. The wayfinding trail will connect people with places and projects in Richmond, including the Ōtākaro Avon River trail, the Richmond Community Garden, Avebury House and Adventure Avenue (near Christchurch East School). The proposed wayfinding sign at Shirley Community Reserve is the beginning of the trail. We also approved plans to relocate a bus stop by 85 North Avon Road. The existing bus stop will be relocated five metres up the road to allow vehicles to safely access the new residential development nearby.
We approved funding for a number of individual and community projects, including a grant from our 2020-21 Youth Development Fund to Jaze Gear-Jones, who will attending the National Youth Touch Championships as a member of the Canterbury U16 Girls Touch team. We also approved funding to Belfast School towards 12 students’ attendance at the Papanui Youth Development’s Trust Leadership Training Course.
We approved a grant of $8,000 from our 2020-21 Discretionary Response Fund to The Neighbourhood Trust as a contribution towards the Whanau Centre and Golden Connections post COVID response and allocated $4,000 from our 2020-2021 Discretionary Response Fund towards Papanui-Innes Community Liaison and events.

Looking back at 2020 and forward to 2021*Written by Emma Norrish, Chair of the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board.
Come this time of year, it’s good to reflect on the past 12 months - and what a year it has been! Who would’ve thought the year would turn out the way it has?
It has been a busy time for our Board, starting with finalising our 2020-2022 Community Board Plan. We appreciate all the feedback we got during the consultation phase of this plan, and we hope it reflects both the community’s and the Board’s priorities for the next two years.
Despite our formal meetings being cancelled during lockdown, we continued to meet via Zoom and still received briefings and updates from staff. We kept up to date with what our community organisations were doing throughout lockdown, and it was fantastic to hear of the amazing work happening to support those in need. We were able to further support these hard-working groups during our annual Strengthening Communities Funding process, which was especially important this year.
Highlights of the year have been the opening of the modular pump track at 10 Shirley Rd, and the start of the St Albans Community Centre rebuild. We look forward to opening this new building early next year, and to continuing to working with the community on further activation of 10 Shirley Rd with $15,000 funding we have ring-fenced.
Traffic issues have also been a focus for us this year, as we continue working to mitigate the downstream effects of the Christchurch Northern Corridor, as well as addressing issues around Northlands and the new Northlink development.
The start of 2021 will see us focusing our attention on Council’s Long Term Plan 2021-2031, which will go out for consultation in February. Please do try and get involved in this engagement, as this document sets out the Council’s budget for the next 10 years and will play a big part in shaping the future of our city.
Until then, have a safe and relaxing holidays, and we look forward to being in touch again early next year!
Ngā mihi o te Kirihimete me te Tau Hou.
Emma Norrish
Christchurch Northern Corridor officially openThanks to everyone who came along to the opening of the Christchurch Northern Corridor on Saturday. It was great to see so many people enjoying the new space.
Neighbours celebrate Summer thanks to grantHere's a photo from a very happy bunch of neighbours in the Redwood area.

They really enjoy the opportunity to get together and look forward to it every year.
Big splash at Jellie Park Pool PartyAfter a cold and windy start to the day, the weather calmed down and the sun came out just in time for the Annual Youth Pool Party at Jellie Park! Two local youth bands entertained while fun was had on the hydro slides and in the outdoor pools. The event was a great way to finish off the irregular school year for the local youth. Papanui Youth Development Trust and the Papanui Youth Advisory group (PAC) took a lead role in organising this partnership event with the Council and other youth agencies.
Trust makes Christmas come true for local childrenThe Santa Claus Workshop Charitable Trust is giving the gift of giving this festive season. Malcolm Westgarth, Workshop Manager and Trust Committee member, delivered a generous number of wooden toys handmade by the members of the Workshop for distribution to organisations within the Board’s area. These toys are sturdy, beautifully made, fun and functional and are given to children who may not otherwise receive a Christmas present.
Northcote School Community Breakfast CelebrationCouncil staff were among the many volunteers that worked to deliver another great Christmas breakfast for the pupils, staff and whānau of Northcote School on Friday 11 December 2020. Volunteers set up before 7am and cooked and served an amazing breakfast for 140 students plus teachers and an estimated 40 whānau who attended in support.
Doors open for Neighbourhood Trust Whānau Centre The Neighbourhood Trust celebrated the opening of their Whānau Centre at Nancy Avenue on 2 December. Local community can access food resilience support, CV development and job seeking support, counselling and life skill support modules, ESOL training, Parent and Caregiver support and a fathers’ group, plus a wrap-around of services to support the wider whānau.

What can you recycle at Christmas?Don’t let the growing mound of packaging, wrapping paper, broken decorations and empty bottles get on top of you this Christmas. Use these helpful tips to make the right decisions about what to do with your festive waste. Disposing of Christmas gift unwrapping- You can put cardboard or paper left behind after Christmas presents have been
unwrapped into the yellow wheelie bin as long as it is bigger in size than an envelope and doesn’t have a plastic coating.
- If you’re uncertain try the tear test. If your Christmas wrapping paper tears it is paper and can be recycled. If it doesn't tear, put it in the red bin.
Excess food- Food scraps (including chicken and turkey bones) and any left-overs you no longer can use can be disposed of in the green organics wheelie bin.
Getting rid of unwanted Christmas gifts- If you have unwanted Christmas gifts, think about taking them to a charity shop or one of the EcoDrop recycling centres. You can find out more about what items are accepted at EcoDrop centres here.
