Introduction - Craig Stockton, MND Scotland Chief Executive

During MND Awareness week this year, MND Scotland launched its campaign to get free personal care for those under 65 who are terminally ill.

I am pleased to say that the Scottish Government response has been positive, and you can read more about this below.

We are also featuring Gordon Aikman's story, and his incredible campaigning to raise awareness and funds for MND Scotland.

Our Annual Report and Accounts for 2013/14 have also been published, and thank you to everyone who has supported MND Scotland during the year.

As usual, there’s a lot to read about in this Autumn edition of Aware. I hope you enjoy it and that you will continue to support the work of MND Scotland in whatever way you can.

Campaigning News

Last year, MND Scotland wrote to each local authority in Scotland asking them to supply details of their charging policy for personal care. The responses formed the basis for our campaign to ensure all local authorities in Scotland follow COSLA guidance and exempt people who are terminally ill from personal care charging.

Our MND Awareness Week reception at the Scottish Parliament on 18th June highlighted our campaign.

90 people with MND and their families, as well as 40 MSPs attended the reception. Michael Matheson MSP, Public Health Minister, confirmed that the Scottish Government believes that no terminally ill person in Scotland should pay for personal care and that they are working with the COSLA guidance group to address this.

Gordon Aikman's Story

At the start of MND Awareness Week, Gordon Aikman, who has been recently diagnosed with MND, shared his story with the Scotland on Sunday.  Gordon explained how he has come to terms with his diagnosis, at the age of just 29.

He moved so many people with his personal account that his story quickly spread across social media, press, and television.

Gordon has also raised a staggering £50K to help MND Scotland fund research through his JustGiving page.

You can also find out more about Gordon's '5 Point Fightback' campaign, which MND Scotland supports.

Research - The MND Scotland Register

Research - MND Scotland Register

Over recent years we have invested over £1,000,000 in research projects which aim to advance our understanding of the causes of MND, and hopefully help us to develop new treatments in the future.

We continue to fund the MND Scotland Register which helps ensure equality of care and access to research.

We have also invested in social research projects which help us to understand the services that people with MND receive from the Health and Social Care sectors, and to identify what works well and what needs to be improved.
