Highlight: National Postdoctoral Association Annual Meeting in Baltimore March 13-15

Registration for the 13th Annual Meeting of the National Postdoctoral Association is now open! The NPA Annual Meeting is the largest meeting and networking event in the postdoctoral community. The NPA strives to make each meeting highly engaging and productive for postdoctoral scholars, administrators, and other individuals working to enhance the postdoctoral experience.

This year, the program will include dozens of workshops, speakers, social events, and two excellent plenary sessions:

  1. Joe Sostaric, PhD, American Chemical Society, Cindy Simpson, MBA, Association of Women in Science, and Jean Shin, PhD, American Sociological Society, will address what associations/societies are doing to help postdocs transition to their next career.
  2. Amri Johnson, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, and Audrey Murrell, PhD, University of Pittsburgh, will speak on why diversity is important for productivity cohesiveness and a successful workforce.

Brown is a Sustaining Member of the NPA and Kate Duggan, Postdoctoral Program & Data Coordinator in OGPS, will be attending and presenting a poster. To join her, register for the Annual Meeting by clicking here--please note that the early bird registration rate ends on Friday, February 13, 2015. If you are interested in attending but would like to learn more, please contact Kate Duggan.

New NIH Policy Addresses Changes in Resubmissions
NIH Notice NOT-OD-15-030 informs the applicant community of a modification for how NIH would like applicants to mark changes in their Resubmission applications. NIH has removed the requirement to identify 'substantial scientific changes' in the text of a Resubmission application by 'bracketing, indenting, or change of typography'. Effective immediately, it is sufficient to outline the changes made to the Resubmission application in the Introduction attachment. The Introduction must include a summary of substantial additions, deletions, and changes to the application. It must also include a response to weaknesses raised in the Summary Statement. See the full notice for details.

Vascular Cell Biology: Frontiers in Basic Science and Clinical Translation
Despite all the progress that has been made in the field, important challenges that remain include improvement of anti-angiogenic treatments in cancer and diabetic retinopathy, and control of inflammation in atherosclerotic and other chronic vascular diseases. This conference will bring together leaders of research from basic science, translational science, biotechnology and pharmaceutical areas, to discuss progress in clinical and translational research areas and to define effective strategies to address these outstanding critical questions. There is also an associated Gordon-Kenan Research Seminar from January 17-18 for students and postdocs. For more information and to register, please visit the conference's website.

Workshop on Leadership in Bioscience
This is a highly interactive 3.5 day workshop in which participants will develop the skills necessary to lead and interact effectively with others, in both one-on-one and group settings. The workshop will focus on techniques, situations, and challenges that relate specifically to leading and managing in the scientific workplace. It will emphasize learning by doing and will involve role playing, giving and receiving feedback, and group problem solving. Much of the learning will be peer-to-peer. Participants will be expected to discuss their own experiences and listen to others as they discuss theirs.

The workshop is targeted to life scientists making, or recently having made, the transition to leadership or managerial positions. Relatively new investigators (e.g., < 3 years) are particularly encouraged to apply, as are senior postdoctoral scholars on the cusp of tenure-track research positions. Application Deadline: January 23, 2015. For more information and to register, please visit the event's website.

Epigenomics
Epigenetic mechanisms have been increasingly linked to risks to a broad spectrum of human diseases; however, the exact function of epigenetic marks in development and disease pathogenesis remains to be better understood. This meeting is designed to capture the recent progresses in the field and at the same time bridge the technological gaps in the field, such as datasets availability, method adoption, and data interpretation.
