Fall Hunting Season in Amish Country, Ohio

Crisp fall days are here, and with them the opportunity to enjoy field and stream. Hunting season for many varieties of game opened in September, with seasons opening throughout fall and winter. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has specific dates, regulations, and complete information.

Amish Country has a broad range of resources for great days outdoors. Start your trip right, with these local stores for hunting supplies and equipment: Raby Hardware in Loudonville, Benton Bow Shop and Hill Country Bows in Millersburg, Erb’s Sports & Archery and Kidron Sports Center in Charm, Hardcore Holsters in Apple Creek, Miller’s Gun Supply in Sugarcreek, and New Bedford Sportsman Supply in Baltic.

Cabins for rent include Ethan’s Retreat in the Woods, Killbuck; Memory Lane Cabin, Sugarcreek; Cricket Hill Cabins, Millersburg; and Secluded Lake Lodge, Newcomerstown.

Then, check out these stocked hunting sites, many with lodging. The Flying Ridge Hunt Club in Millersburg has cabins for rent and provides shooting sports and hunting on property of upland bird and trophy whitetail. Briarwood Cabins in Sugarcreek has cabins and catch & release fishing. Clear Creek Hunting Ranch in Millersburg is a whitetail deer preserve, while Buckskin Trophy Outfitters in Killbuck offers free-range whitetail deer and turkey hunts.

Outfitting a Man Cave with Mt. Hope Timbers

Most men would not argue with spending extended time in a rustic cabin, deep in the woods and disconnected from the hustle of everyday life.

This is where man caves come in handy. When done right, a man cave puts you in the wooded cabin without leaving your home.

Jr. Yoder at Mt. Hope Timbers is helping man caves become a reality. “Guys are looking for an in-house retreat, a place to relax,” said Yoder.

Yoder is using some of the most unique features of trees—from gnarled root systems of a big leaf maple for a table base to Colorado aspen with real bear claw marks to a twisting juniper—to make furnishings that retain the character of a log cabin.

He is also using reclaimed barn timbers for custom carved mantels. Yoder learned the art of mantel carving from Will Kallberg, a well-known sculptor who operated Eagle Song Studio in Winesburg for many years.

Because its pieces cannot be exactly replicated, Mt. Hope Timbers sells its furniture off the floor. However, custom furniture based on a design on specific measurements can be ordered.

Mt. Hope Timbers is located at 7928 State Route 241 outside of Mt. Hope. Jr. Yoder can be reached by phone at 330-674-1838. The store is open Monday-Friday, 10-5, and Saturday 10-4.

October: Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits: Apples, tomatoes, watermelon

Vegetables: Cauliflower, parsnips, pumpkins, squash, spinach

Tip: If you haven’t cooked with parsnips before, look for ones that are about eight inches long and tapering from thick to thin. The smoother the skin, the better.

Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns: Save the Date!

The 7th annual Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns will take place on Saturday, December 13 & Sunday, December 14, 2014. This is the first year that the two-day event will be held on a Saturday and Sunday. Tickets will go on sale November 1.

Celebrate the season with an afternoon of progressive cookie tasting and touring 12 festively decorated inns. Explore treasure-filled interiors and experience the delights of Christmas. This year’s theme, "12 Days of Christmas," will feature a quilt by master quilter Loretta Coblentz and quilt-block squares at each participating inn. Participants receive one specialty cookie at each inn, and innkeepers invite you to their properties from 12:30 to 6 p.m. each day.

Festivities will conclude with a drawing for a $150 gift certificate that can be used for lodging at one of the participating inns.

Other cookie selections or beverages may be offered at each stop of the self-paced, self-guided tour, as well as local businesses offering demonstrations and samples at many inns. In its six years, the Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns has raised $50,000 for local charities. For more information about this year’s event and participating inns, visit the official website here or call 330-674-3975.
