Editor's note

Thousands of students receive their A-level results this week and will find out whether or not they’ve made the grade. But despite the importance placed on exam results, extracurricular activities, such as sports teams, school plays and volunteering, can also play a massive role in a student’s development – and can even make the difference when it comes to getting a university place. Shona McIntosh compares A-levels with the International Baccalaureate and reveals which qualification makes for the most well-rounded student.

The Taj Mahal was built in 1653 as a monument to the grief of Emperor Shah Jahan. Its pristine beauty once evoked a “tear running down the cheek of time”, but modern pollution has sullied the white marble with soot and sewage. Carolyn Roberts urges authorities to heed the successful preservation of other world monuments in order to restore the Taj before it’s too late.

Ageing is linked with some of the most common chronic diseases such as cancer, dementia and diabetes. Lorna Harries and Matt Whiteman explain their latest experiment where they successfully reversed the ageing of human cells and took the first step towards anti-degenerative drugs.
